JR Late Night Top 10 Music Videos of the Year 2013

JR's Top 10 Music Videos of 2013
JR Late Night Blogs publishes a yearly list on the music that defined the entire year. As the year 2013 comes to a close, it is a great time for JR to present his latest list on the Top 10 Music Videos that rocked the entire year. Music videos which released from 01 December 2012 to 30 November 2013 that earned numerous viewership and huge internet following were the ones chosen by JR in this year's list. JR ranked them by his own preference. For this year, JR reduced the number of music videos to be ranked to 10 for him to give special attention to why he chose each video. Miley Cyrus is the big winner for this year's list earning both the two highest ranking spots. Her videos for We Can't Stop and Wrecking Ball are ranked #1 and #2 respectively. This is the first time in JR Late Night Blogs history that one person earned the top two spots withing a top 10 list (even with the inclusion of JR's Buddies lists). Rounding up the top 3 is Justin Timberlake for his Mirrors music video. While Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, and Rihanna are absent for this year's list, the queen of pop culture, Lady Gaga, retained her blog appearance who made only one entry this year at #7 for the music video of Applause. Newcomers include Robin Thicke for his Blurred Lines and Macklemore for his Can't Hold Us. PSY remains on the list at #10 for Gentleman, he previously earned the title for Music Video of the Year last 2012 for Gangnam Style. With this year belonging to Miley Cyrus, JR now unveils JR Late Night Blogs' Music Videos of 2013.

Wrecking Ball may have been the best single of Miley Cyrus in terms of sales and video views this year but it all started with We Can't Stop. We Can't Stop basically started the birth of a new era, the birth of a rebellion, and the birth of a new Miley Cyrus. We Can't Stop is what I consider as 2013's Music Video of the Year. Some may disagree with my choice but I stand with my decision placing this video on top of others. It may be a controversial video but it, for me, defined what truly a music combined with video really is. It should present what the song is really about. And Miley Cyrus does not fail, she presented us with a video defining what We Can't Stop means. The video presents us with an ideal life of a teenager focused on pleasure and fun. The video's weird yet fun contents make it at the par with those of Madonna's and Lady Gaga's. Miley Cyrus sparked a rebellion with this song and proved to be a success. It even created a new dance craze - the twerk. With We Can't Stop, she may even be the biggest star this year beating the likes of Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and even Bieber.

Miley Cyrus followed We Can't Stop with a more emotional song - Wrecking Ball. Wrecking Ball in fact had beaten We Can't Stop in terms of music sales and music video views and made Miley Cyrus a prominent music icon. Unlike the first video where Miley sparked a rebellion, the second video presented us with a Miley who is broken and vulnerable. The video presents us with, you guess it right, a wrecking ball. In the video, the wrecking ball smashes through walls implying destruction and anger. Also within the video is an emotional Miley, riding the wrecking ball in pain and despair. Despite all the nakedness and provocativeness, the video is an experience which would catch the emotions of a person. Wrecking Ball was loved by many because of its catchy tone and meaning. A lot of covers were made from the song's concept and idea. With Wrecking Ball, people wanted more from Miley. Unlike her first single and music video this year, Miley Cyrus became a likable celebrity with Wrecking Ball. Wrecking Ball continued the dominance of Miley Cyrus in the music world.

Rounding up the top 3 is Justin Timberlake's Mirrors. Justin Timberlake made a huge comeback this year with new singles and even a new album. But of all the music he has released in the span of the entire year, no other single gave a lasting impression than that of Mirrors. Mirrors is one of the must hear songs and must watch music videos for this year. The song is reflective of the true meaning of everlasting love with the video being a love story of an old couple reminiscing their teenage years (where their love began). According to JT, it was a representation of the love story of his grandparents. Why I like his video is its emotional value in the entire duration of the vid complemented by the song's lyrics and tone. Of all the videos this year, Mirrors by Justin Timberlake was the one I can't get over watching for its uniqueness and style plus factor its choreography and setting. It truly deserves the Video of the Year award presented by MTV during its yearly Video Music Awards. I hope Justin Timberlake continues creating lengthly videos which can captivate one's emotions.

"It's been written in the scars on our hearts, We're not broken just bent, And we can learn to love again"
We can't miss the single by P!nk - Just Give Me A Reason. Just Give Me A Reason started the music year that was 2013. P!nk's collaboration with the lead singer of fun., Nate Reuss, created a ballad about two conflicting lovers, one who is confused with their relationship, the other seeing no problem at all. It is a collaborative song that proved to be a success. The understanding of the song requires pure dedication in listening and watching of the music video. I actually got interested in the song when my sister constantly listened to this song for consecutive days during the summer. It's emotional lyrics (complemented by the voices of P!nk and Nate) made me like the song adding it to my yearly playlist. The music video in fact is one of my favorites. P!nk never fails to create a video that presents a message that would touch each and every one of her fans.I hope though that she continues collaborating with more singers creating more songs that would not just try but totally catch the heart of the listener.

"And he's long gone when he's next to me, And I realize the blame is on me"
Giving an exception for this one, Taylor Swift's I Knew You Were Trouble. I Knew You Were Trouble was released last year December but it gained attention in the music year that was 2013. It was some say a statement about her past relationship/s. The video starts with a narration by Taylor explaining her lost of identity. It was her lyrical reminiscence of a past relationship. The video then presented a relationship between a couple starting as a normal one then it all falls down in havoc and devastation. Let's say it was like her video of  Mine but much more mature in theme. The video was a great turn of mood from her 2012 song, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.

"But you're an animal, baby, it's in your nature, Just let me liberate you"
You wouldn't survive 2013 if you haven't watched the video or just listened to Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke ft. T.I. and Pharell. The longest #1 song in Billboard's Hot 100 for the year 2013, Blurred Lines is probably the most popular and most listened to song in the entire year. The song and video is just purely sexual (heating things up for us humans). It sparked controversy in the duration of its release as the video (according to publicists or media personalities) degrades women to sexual objects. The thing is, the video and the song, is just a fun turn of mood for music. People can't get over it because of how it can attract through tone and lyrics. The video just compliments the fun nature of the song. There are two versions of the video for Blurred Lines. The one posted in this blog is the clean version. For the explicit, uncensored, and unrated version of the video, just watch it on Youtube (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwT6DZCQi9k). Note: The video contents are only for adults and not meant to be seen by children.

"Pop culture was in art, now art's in pop culture in me"
The list is not complete when there is no appearance by the Queen of Pop Culture, Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga was absent for last year's list but re-entered this year's list after releasing a song and video dedicated to her fans. Lady Gaga never fails to present us with a creative, eye-catching video. It always has a Gaga-touch that makes it unique amongst other artists. For this year, Lady Gaga released Applause, her first single after a one-year non-single release. Applause is basically about Gaga's love for her fans who can't wait but give her an applause for every art that she does. The video comprises of mixed imagery that contributes to the eccentricity, quirky and bizarre nature of Gaga. Notable features include a black swan, a 'hand'-bra and a two-piece made entirely of seashells. It was a long wait for the Queen of Pop Lady Gaga, but she made a prominent comeback with Applause.

"Honey, you're my golden star, You know you can make my wish come true"
Which Bruno Mars video made the list? The video that brought us back to the 80s. Where most songs in today's culture are progressive and modern, Bruno Mars' Treasure is a backward take on music. It brings us back to an era where music videos have still developing special effects, not that clear presentation, and somewhat psychedelic appearance. Of all the music videos that Bruno Mars released this year, Treasure was the one that caught my attention for its different take amongst others. Treasure has even unique choreography that make you want to move and groove to the song's tune. Bruno Mars made us treasure 2013's music.

CAN'T HOLD US
(Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft. Ray Dalton)
Current YouTube Views:
166,923,940
US Billboard Charts Peak:
#1
Official Release Date:
17 April 2013
Genre:
Alternative Hip-Hop
Song Length:
4 minutes 18 seconds
Video Length:
7 minutes 04 seconds
Song Writers:
Ben Haggerty, Ryan Lewis
YouTube Channel:
Music Video Source:

"Can we go back, this is the moment, Tonight is the night, we’ll fight 'til it’s over"
Can't Hold Us stays at #9. Macklemore is different from all the artists listed in this year's list. Macklemore is more of an independent artist rather than a studio artist. In short, he is the one who finances the songs even the songs' videos. Can't Hold Us is one of the better ones in his magazine of songs and videos. Can't Hold Us' video is a celebratory one presenting a journey through sands, forests, waters, ice, suburbs, farms, even skyscrapers. The song and video defines the personality of Macklemore as an artist encompassing everything in his path. Can't Hold Us is one of those songs easily missed in the span of the year but it grabbed JR's attention to make it a spot in the yearly list.

"Gonna make you sweat, Gonna make you wet, You know who I am, Wet PSY! "
To end the list, what better video to be listed than Gentleman by Korean pop sensation PSY. Gentleman is a quirky presentation on the life and culture of South Korea. Gentleman is actually JR's favorite in the list (but of course, JR ranked it via his own process) as it is a very fun video to watch and reminisce. It reminds me of the video for Gangnam Style but a more different take. Though it is not at par with Gangnam Style, Gentleman proved to be a success creating a dance craze for the summer. It generated various dance covers (mostly by teenage men and women in their shorts). Gentleman is the one that I shall end my list of the Music Videos for the year.
