"Let Greendale Cast A Spell On You"

Welcome to Greendale, a town of grim and horror plagued with history of witches, the very town that Sabrina Spellman gets to decide whether she fully embraces her dark witch side or sacrifice it for a healthy mortal life with her friends and boyfriend. With an adventure really worth binge-watching, "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" is a worthy addition to your Netflix watchlist but with a heavy warning for its very disturbing content.

While I lived to watch and enjoy the 1990s comedic predecessor on an old tube TV, the 2018 version exceeds the former by a huge margin by just how willing it is to embrace a tone only horror movies can adhere, a rare feat in fact for TV series. The show is well equipped with a cast that fully embodied the characters that are in the series. Aunt Hilda, Aunt Zelda, Ambrose, Harvey, Prudence, Nicholas and Kiernan as Sabrina are just a few that you'll love in the series. Each episode is catered with a dilemma only Sabrina could face and these are what you'll have to anticipate all the way. With all the good mentioned, The series is full of satanic symbolism that might make you uncomfortable along the experience. I, for one, felt sinning upon watching the series; so, I advise you to watch at your own risk. Unlike Riverdale, where despite all the darkness that builds the town you can have high hopes on, Greendale is just full of darkness that there is just pure evil to rely on. So be warned!

🚩🚩🚩SPOILERS AHEAD 🚩🚩🚩

Here are some important points I had on watching "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina":

✅ Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina
- Like Skarsgard exceeded Curry's Pennywise, Shipka exceeded Joan Hart in making the titular character as legitimate as possible. Sabrina will always be a witch but her dark side is balanced by the goodness in her heart. Shipka's charm accomplishes all of that as she makes Sabrina all the more likeable despite all the evil her family is in.

✅ Aunt Hilda & Aunt Zelda
- The Jekyll and Hyde combination of Aunt Hilda and Aunt Zelda are just a perfect accompaniment to how balanced the character of Sabrina as. Their duo may have serious contradictory intentions in the series but that's what makes them both comedic and lovable. The scene when Aunt Zelda murders Aunt Hilda but eventually bringing her back to life is just epic.

✅ Witchcraft and Occult References
- Staying true to the evil vibe, the series made heavy use of terminologies and concepts only a true demonologist or paranormal medium would understand. The series made me learn and understand the ideas of necromancy, astral projection, familiar, and harrowing. In addition, the series honored horror classics such as The Fly and The Night of the Living Dead either by showing them or discussing them in dialogue.

✅ Sabrina's Friends
- Sabrina has a multitude of friends each having their chance to shine throughout the series. Roz, Susie, Sabrina and Harvey are Greendale's very own Riverdale's Archie, Jughead, Veronica and Betty. Sabrina also have her friends Nicholas and Prudence to the rescue when problem looms in the way. The clash between the two groups of friends of Sabrina is also evident due to their mortal or witch nature, something to look forward to in the series.

✅ Harvey and Nicholas
- The entry of Nicholas into the mix may put into jeopardy the relationship between Sabrina and Harvey. While Sabrina remains faithful to Harvey, Nicholas's enticing looks and wit are so hard to ignore that I for one hope for a potential love triangle to occur. Besides Sabrina has two natures, one boyfriend for each nature maybe?

✅ Ambrose and Luke
- Inclusivity is so important nowadays in American TV that there will always be a gay character or relationship in the mix. Ambrose and Luke's relationship is so interesting that other than Harvey and Sabrina, it's something that I look forward to each and every episode. The times when Ambrose astral projects for Luke and when Luke teleports Ambrose to school are too cute to handle.

✅ Academy of Unseen Arts
- There are times that I wanted to study in fictional schools like Harry Potter's Hogwarts. The same goes to this school from Sabrina, the Academy of Unseen Arts. The campus is mysterious just like Hogwarts and also has its own version of subjects and classes just like in Hogwarts. I mean, who wouldn't want to go to a school that is full of mystery and adventure, right? Something to feed that curiosity for the dark arts probably.

✅ Key Plot Conflicts
- Each and every episode is catered for a problem that Sabrina has to solve using her witchcraft wit and skill making you binge-watch all the way to the last episode as some episodes will keep you hanging. Some noteworthy conflicts include Sabrina having to resurrect and eventually "de-resurrect" (if such a word exists) Harvey's brother, Sabrina saving her friends from Apophis (a parasitic demon), Sabrina having to save Prudence from The Feasts of Feasts and Sabrina having to save herself from a trial amongst witches. I guess I have enumerated every plot conflict afterall because each one is an experience worth the watch.

✅ Greendale Thirteen
- Attention to the 10th episode of the series. This is where everything comes in full circle for Sabrina. The Greendale Thirteen is the final battle Sabrina has to face in this season of the series. The arc focuses on the revenge of the thirteen witches hanged to their death by the inhabitants of Greendale. They eventually summon the Red Angel of Death to kill all the first-born male of every family. The tension is just huge for the last episode of the series as this is where Sabrina gets to fully embrace her witch side to protect everyone she loves.

⛔️ Blur
- Attention was placed on focusing to the characters by blurring out the background at particular scenes. Some might find this artistic but there are times when it is overdone or becomes inconsistent when placed in between scenarios that doesn't use the blur.

⛔️ Disturbing Content
- The only reason I won't recommend this series is for its overly disturbing and graphic content especially if you are in a religion that is against satanic imagery and dialogue. There were times that I felt I needed to have myself be blessed after hearing a numerous "Praise Satan" in the series. Else, there are scenes which involve suicide and murder, an orgy involving teens, and also signing in The Book of the Beasts succumbing one's soul to Satan. I felt I have greatly sinned for watching the series.

With 10 good reasons to watch and 2 reasons not to watch,
"Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" is an 9.0/10 for me.
