"My Heart Is Pounding With Excitement"
I always dreamt of a world full of Pokémon where they and man live in peace and harmony. My heart is pounding with excitement as I imagine the idea of having a Growlithe as a partner Pokémon while walking along streets and greeting my friends who also have a Pokémon buddy of their own. Lo and behold, welcome to Ryme City where you are free to have a Pokémon partner of your own. From the small Charmanders to the massive Gyarados, there's too much Pokémon to meet, to capture and to handle.
Tim Goodman, though, who once dreamt of being a Pokémon trader struggled with the realities of adulthood pursuing a career as an insurance salesman instead. On a twist of events, Tim would learn that his dad died from an accident. Pikachu, his father's Pokémon partner, pushes him to investigate on the crime eventually discovering a more evil intent ahead for both man and Pokémon.
It's a Pokémon trainer's dream to have everything Pokémon on screen. It's a joy naming each Pokémon that were shown on screen hoping even that a few of our favorite ones will be given screentime. How astounding the world was done made it felt like everything is genuinely realistic and existent. The CGI and design of the Pokémon universe were matched with real-time physics and environment that makes the experience as authentic as possible. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is one of the best video game movie adaptations in film, a must watch especially if you're a Pokémon fanboy.
🚩🚩🚩SPOILERS AHEAD 🚩🚩🚩
Here are some noteworthy points I had on watching "Pokémon: Detective Pikachu":
➕Pikachu
- Who doesn't love Pikachu, the Pokémon that would define everything Pokémon. The first time he pops on screen made almost everyone in the cinema shout in awe. The experience of journeying with Pikachu is definitely as fun as it gets.
➕Mr. Mime
- There are too many Pokémon to mention but the scene involving Mr. Mime is pure Pokémon gold. Mr. Mime is the Pokémon universe's master of pantomime, an art of acting where gestures and motions make unseeable things as if they actually exist. It's fun joking around with this Pokémon.
➕Mewtwo
- The most powerful Pokémon is held by the erratic and uncontrollable Mewtwo. He is mankind's product of experimentation with the mythic Mew. He appears to be the main villain but wait until you see his or her true nature in this film. (Mewtwo is genderless so I don't really know which pronoun to use.)
➕Ryan Reynolds
- "Pika pika pika" is the typical sound of the cute Pikachu but wait til you hear the voice of Ryan Reynolds voicing out his lines. At first, upon seeing the trailers, I didn't think it would work because Pokémon aren't meant to speak words (except of course for the genetically manipulated Mewtwo). It did work, however, in evolving a story that is creative and sensible.
➕Real-Time Physics and Environment
- What I love most of experiencing this Pokémon universe is how genuine and real it felt. It's as if everything was existent in the same world we are in. The amount of physics, texture and environment placed made everything as synced with reality as possible. The hair and skin of each Pokémon made the Pokémon feel real. Their movement is also moving with the weather or the setting they are in. CGI astounding done I guess. I have to mention though that one scene involving Tim going down from the top of a building as very fast.
➕Ryme City
- Reverence to the source material is the difficulty directors face when making a movie. The setting of Ryme City made everything legitimately as if you were exploring the same Pokémon universe on your Nintendo DS or Switch just made into film. The fun is there and how close it is to the universe is a treat.
➕Pokémon Galore
- It was a heart pounding seeing each Pokémon on screen. The classic Snorlax, Gengar, Gyarados with the next generation's Snubbull, Aipom, Pancham and Pangoro, and the massive Torterra are but a few that I'll mention. It was fun naming each one as they made their presence known on screen. I wished seeing Legendary ones though if in case this movie has its sequels or follow-ups.
➕Reality Unfolds
- It wouldn't be a detective movie if there isn't a mystery involved. It's amazing how this movie easily used a portion of it's source video game as it's story not without including their own twist. Everything unfolded naturally typical of a linear video game. Discovering the reality of the true villain, his true intents are a surprise including the reveal why Pikachu talks in the first place.
With 8 positive points and no negative points,
"Pokémon: Detective Pikachu" is a satisfactory 8.9/10 for me.
