SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY
HISTORY PHOTOBLOG

1907
The CICM Missionaries arrived in the Philippines, mandated by the Holy See to evangelize the northern part of the country. Pretty soon, it became apparent that Baguio, then a small mountain village resort in the province of Benguet, around two hundred and fifty kilometers north of Manila, will be pivotal for the region. With an elevation of at least 1,500 meters above sea level, Baguio is a natural gateway to and from the Cordillera mountain range, which traverses the Mountain Provinces (Montanosa), the home of numeours indigenous tribes.

1911
Fr. Serafino Devesse, CICM, first conceived a primary class with ten students huddled in a small wooden house, on the present-day Cathedral Hill.

1915
The intermediate grades and a trade school were started under the guidance of Florimond Carlu.

1921
The first year high school was offered.
1928
A full secondary course was offered.

1938
The CICM Fathers envisioned the prospect of more students for the school, being the first private school in Baguio City. In anticipation of this, they built another school edifice on Cathedral Hill to house the elementary and high school departments. This was made the main Saint Louis University.

1938
Campo Filipino School was made a branch of Saint Louis University. Campo Filipino was changed into Holy Family College and her curricula were extended to collegiate normal and secretarial courses with special emphasis on music, painting, and fine arts.

1941
Saint Louis University was temporarily closed during the war outbreak. It later resumed classes during the occupation days with the permission of the Japanese.
June 1945
Saint Louis University picked up its energy and pace, and once more admitted students from the ruins of war. The elementary department opened immediately after the war. The high school promptly accepted students in the following year.

1951
The high school boys were placed under the direct supervision of the Sisters of Missionary Canonesses of Saint Augustine.
