JR's The Month in Review: August 2012

JR's The Month in Review: August 2012
Finding Nemo gets a 3D reboot, Angela Merkel named World's Most Powerful Woman of the Year, Jesse Robredo bids farewell, and PSY's 'Oppa Gangnam Style' Effect; those are some of August 2012's Headlines. The months of July and August 2012 were full of controversies especially in the world of politics, media and entertainment. It was a very sad moment for the Filipinos when an entertainment icon and a public servant passed just recently. Dolphy, The Philippine King of Comedy passed away last July 2012; whereas, Jesse Robredo, the former DILG secretary, passed away last August 2012. It was nine years when Finding Nemo gained worldwide box office success; it finally gets a 3D makeover. With the exciting news of Finding Nemo 3D, it was a very devastating moment for a community in Colorado as a shooting massacre happened within a local midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. In media, Angela Merkel gets named the World's Most Powerful Woman for the second consecutive year; Oprah Winfrey, Lady Gaga and Sofia Vergara also made the Forbes' list. This month, we also go back to what has been London Olympics 2012. Last August 2012, an innocence causes a riot worldwide. It's July 2012 and August 2012 in review.

Oppa Gangnam Style
AUGUST 2012 TECHNOLOGY:
"OPPA GANGNAM STYLE" EFFECT
On track to become the most viewed video in You Tube history, PSY's insanely catchy K-Pop smash has been watched 330 million times, and is number one in Australia and the UK. You must have heard the wonderfully uplifting Gangnam Style, by K-Pop superstar PSY over the last few weeks. A brilliant satire on the excesses of Korean's version of credit card touting cashed-up bogans, the song has exploded on to the world's consciousness to such an extent that it has become the most-watched video of 2012. Since being posted on YouTube on July 15, Gangnam Style has bounced its way past Carly Rae Jepsen's hit Call Me Maybe, passing her 277 million views more than a week ago. Now, with 330 million views on YouTube in less than three months, Gangnam Style is closing in on Justin Bieber's Baby, which has amassed 783 million views since February 2010. As Africa, Europe and South America wake-up to G-Style, not only will PSY be number one by Christmas, he'll break the internet at the same time.

JR's In-Depth Review:
"Carly Rae Jepsen may have brought a big hit last June 2012, PSY brought a bigger hit that may be called as the Hit of the Year. Gangnam Style, a song by K-Pop Superstar PSY, is a dance craze which gained public attention just recently. With some publicity from the MTV Video Music Awards, The Ellen Degeneres Show, and The Today Show, PSY's Gangnam Style is set to become a future Billboard No. 1 song. Gangnam, according to what I have researched, is a local district in Seoul, South Korea where PSY was hugely influenced with.  It just shows how Koreans can keep up the beat when it comes to pop and culture. It just shows how powerful K-Pop is slowly becoming. I hope that Justin Bieber would't feel bad if PSY defeated 'Baby' as The Most Viewed Video in YouTube history."

London Olympics 2012
AUGUST 2012 SPORTS:
LONDON OLYMPICS 2012
"It has been a genuine privilege to cover the Olympic and Paralympic Games. To witness first hand the many unforgettable sporting moments has been something very special. But is Britain a different country and London a different city today because of the festival of sport that has just finished? And, more importantly, will it make a lasting impact on us all for years to come, long after the memories have faded? The successful staging of the Games has given the country a massive confidence boost at a time when there are so many concerns - economic and otherwise - to trouble us. From the creation of the Olympic Park in a run-down part of east London, to the torch relay and the smooth running of the creaking Victorian transport infrastructure, the Games have been delivered with precision and impressive purpose. All the anxieties of the preceding seven years - over costs, security and transport - now seem slightly ridiculous. They weren't. We were right to be nervous. Staging the Olympic and Paralympic Games are the biggest undertaking any country can take and do not come cheap at £9 billion of public money." - David Bond, BBC's Sports Editor

JR's In-Depth Review:
"The London Olympics 2012 is one of the most anticipated sporting events in history. With a record-breaking Michael Phelps to the Largest McDonalds in history, we can say it as a better experience than that of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. One thing that intrigued me, however, is that no monetary support was given by the Olympic Committee to the city of London for the entire duration of the event. We can see here that only a few rich countries will get the opportunity to host the said event. I wish that our country would also host the Olympics at one point; but, at present, it seems impossible with the huge deficit our country has."

Jesse Robredo
AUGUST 2012 LOCAL:
JESSE ROBREDO
The nation mourns the untimely death of an exemplary and popular public servant, the late Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jesse Robredo. He was 54. An engineering graduate from La Salle and with a Harvard master’s degree in public administration, Robredo was mayor of lowly Naga City, Camarines Sur, for 18 years. Robredo died on August 18 around 5 in the afternoon in the waters of Obingay Village, about 500 meters off Masbate while his small private Piper Seneca plane was attempting an emergency landing. One of the plane’s engines had failed 20 minutes after takeoff from Cebu in central Philippines on the way to Naga 371 kms to the north. The ill-fated aircraft crashed in Masbate waters, midway or 184 kms to Robredo’s hometown. Robredo carefully cultivated an image as a humble pro-people public servant who served his people with distinction, quiet competence, infectious integrity, and visionary governance.

JR's In-Depth Review:
"Jesse Robredo, as I can see for the past years in Philippine government, is the humblest, most admirable and most ideal public servant. Besides giving Naga the title of a city, Jesse Robredo somewhat changed the scene of Philippine politics when he signed the agreement on the removal of names of politicians in various government projects especially in public works and highways. We may never see a future Jesse Robredo but it is his influence that would change Philippine governance and politics forever."

Dolphy
JULY 2012 LOCAL:
DOLPHY
Celebrities and fans alike were united in mourning after the passing of Rodolfo Vera Quizon Sr., more popularly known as the Comedy King Dolphy. According to a report, Dolphy passed away at the Makati Medical Center 8:34pm on Tuesday, July 10 after a bout with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The Comedy King was 83.

JR's In-Depth Review:
"Dolphy has been and will remain The Philippine King of Comedy. He has been the key figure in what is today's comedy. It was because of him that Vice Ganda, Willie Revillame, and Ai-Ai Delas Alas continue to bring in the big bucks in the entertainment industry. I just feel bad that Dolphy is still not being granted and identified as a National Artist. His contributions to Philippine entertainment is very broad making him a qualified member of the prestigious group of Philippine Artists. Comedy has been a part of the Filipino family; Thank Dolphy for that."

PNoy VS. TV Patrol
JULY 2012 MEDIA:
PNOY VS. TV PATROL
President Aquino criticized TV Patrol anchor Noli de Castro for his negative comments to positive government news he occasionally makes during the banter portion at the end of TV Patrol's daily news programs. In his speech Friday night at the 25th anniversary of the Philippines' number one prime time news program, Aquino vented his frustrations over Kabayan's negative extemporaneous comments and cited several examples.

JR's In-Depth Review:
"One issue that I was intrigued with is PNoy's speech in the 25th anniversary of TV Patrol. It looks like that Philippine President Noynoy Aquino is limiting the freedom of speech of TV and print media. Being one of those bloggers who will be affected by the Cybercrime Law which will be applied in the upcoming days seems to be unfair especially to us who gives opinions, comments, suggestions, and ratings to the Philippine government. It also seems that Philippine media is slowly losing its power over authority. We should continue fighting for our rights of opinion as it what has been the product and effort of Noynoy's father, Ninoy, and mother, Cory. Please Noynoy, do not limit our freedom of speech. I back Noli De Castro for this one."

The World's 100 Most Powerful Women 2012
AUGUST 2012 MEDIA:
THE WORLD's 100 MOST POWERFUL WOMEN of 2012
For nine years FORBES has ranked the 100 most powerful women in the world. These are the women who adhere to the traditional classifications of power (political and economic might) and those who have risen to the top of the social and cultural landscape. It is our annual snapshot of women who impact the world. This year the list features eight heads of state–including our No. 1, German Chancellor Angela Merkel (plus one monarch who just celebrated her Diamond Jubilee), 25 CEOs who control $984 billion in revenues and 11 billionaires personally worth nearly $80 billion. We feature some dozen entrepreneurs and 10 celebrities who do more than look good: they’re philanthropic do-gooders and entrepreneurial go-getters.

JR's In-Depth Review:
"Forbes just recently released their list on the World's 100 Most Powerful Women of the Year. It is once again led by Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel and followed by United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Another notable member is Michelle Obama who is listed within the Top 10. The list presents us how women are dominating politics, businesses, and entertainment. Melinda Gates, Sheryl Sandberg, and Ursula Burns shows us that women are not just made for sewing clothes and cooking food, they also use technology to influence a lot of people worldwide. Arianna Huffington, Anna Wintour, JK Rowling, uses the power of print to bring in fearless news, opinions, and stories. Lady Gaga, Oprah Winfrey and Sofia Vergara just can't be out of the list because of their massive fan base. Let's not forget Laurene Powell Jobs, Steve Jobs' wife, who is currently working for reform in education and technology. Women have been a part of our community and it is respect that we can offer to each and everyone of them."

Innocence of Muslims
AUGUST 2012 INTERNATIONAL:
INNOCENCE OF MUSLIMS
Innocence of Muslims is perhaps the most famous movie in the world, but no one seems to have seen it. Maybe that's because it doesn't exist beyond the muddled 14-minute "trailer" on YouTube that has prompted anti-American violence in the Middle East. The film's writer, Sam Bacile, aka Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, initially said he created a full-length movie that screened at the Vine Theatre in Hollywood under the title The Innocence of Bin Laden. But a theater employee told the Los Angeles Times no one attended the screening, nor did the employee watch the movie. And a YouTube video called "Innocence of Muslims 74 Min" is merely the same 14 minutes looped over and over. One of the actors, Cindy Lee Garcia, tells THR that Nakoula boasted he was making a two-hour action epic, though Garcia has seen nothing beyond the infamous 14 minutes. "The movie doesn't exist," says Marium Mohiuddin of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, which advises Hollywood producers on how to portray Muslims accurately. "We've been looking hard for a full movie, and we haven't found anything." But whether it's real doesn't seem to matter to the rioting radicals because not only are they convinced there is such a movie, "there's a complete misconception that this is a major Hollywood project and not a poorly thrown-together video," adds Mohiuddin. "They're used to government-sanctioned entertainment, so they think that this has been sanctioned by the U.S. government, which makes sense to them because they believe Americans mistreat Muslims who live in America."

JR's In-Depth Review:
"The movie director of the film 'Innocence of Muslims', for me, have really crossed the line. The press and media may have the freedom of speech; one thing they have to remember, however, is how they should respect religion, culture and gender. Those three factors, when given wrong interpretations, would really lead to disagreements with the one who gave the interpretation and the people who follow that religion or culture being interpreted. The way the Muslims reacted with the film would be as well my reaction when my religion, nationality, and culture is disrespected. Their protest seems, for me, right and fair. I am with the Muslims for this one because the movie truly disrespects the nature of their God and their community. If I were a part of the Muslim community, I would wage war and declare protest against what the movie director has done to my beliefs and way of life."

The Dark Knight Massacare
JULY 2012 INTERNATIONAL:
THE DARK KNIGHT MASSACRE
A masked gunman opens fire at a midnight showing of the highly anticipated movie, killing 12 people in one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent memory. A gunman stormed into a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, early Friday morning, and opened fire on an audience watching a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises, killing at least 12 people and wounding as many as 50 more. Police have apprehended an alleged suspect, whom they've identified as 24-year-old James Holmes. The mass shooting is one of America's deadliest in recent history, and the death count is expected to rise; many critically wounded victims are currently fighting for life in hospitals. Calling on Americans to come together, President Obama vowed to bring the perpetrator to justice.

JR's In-Depth Review:
"The Dark Knight Rises has been a must see film this 2012. It would be the last of the planned Dark Knight trilogy of Christopher Nolan. One local theater in Colorado, however, is grieving for the lives of their loved ones who has been shot while watching the midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. I feel bad for those who were victims of this massacre. One place we feel safe is a movie theater because we are watching it with security and company of other people. But if this case arises, we immediately feel fear instead of excitement. This event made me fear watching in local theaters which have no security watching inside the theater. My condolences goes to the families who are grieving the loss of their loved ones."

Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes Divorce
JULY 2012 ENTERTAINMENT:
TOM CRUISE, KATIE HOLMES DIVORCE
Tom Cruise refused to leave his hotel in the English countryside to return to New York last week as he continued to struggle with the aftermath of his marriage break-up. The Hollywood star, 50, extended his stay at five-star The Grove Hotel in Hertfordshire, telling aides he couldn’t face going back to the States after Katie Holmes filed for divorce.

JR's In-Depth Review:
"Just recently, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes declared it quits. This issue seems to me a very notable one since it merely does not focus on Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes but instead on their daughter, Suri. Having parents divorced, Suri will definitely be affected by the separation of her parents. It really is very unfortunate for one child to have both parents leave each other leaving the child abandoned or being fought over custody by the parents. I just wish that, though Tom and Katie are already divorced, they would come to the attention of their daughter, Suri, at the right moments of her life."

Finding Nemo 3D
AUGUST 2012 ENTERTAINMENT:
FINDING NEMO 3D
3D is often a lazy way for Hollywood to increase the price of a movie ticket — but a 3D re-release of Pixar's 2003 children's classic actually reveals new dimensions. With a 99% positive review score on Rotten Tomatoes, Pixar's 2003 children's movie Finding Nemo would seem to be almost beyond improvement. That hasn't stopped Hollywood from trying with a new 3D version of the $850 million-grossing megahit, which arrives in theaters today in advance of a December Blu-Ray release. In a twist, the same critics who routinely criticize 3D conversion as a lazy cash-grab that adds almost nothing to a movie but a higher ticket price are saying that applying the strategy to Finding Nemo has made a great movie even greater. Has Pixar created an exception to the rule or is it just gilding the lily?

JR's In-Depth Review:
"One film I would definitely watch once more but in 3D is Finding Nemo. It is an animation classic worth revisiting in a new system of movie technology. The first film I watched in 3D was The Amazing Spiderman just this June 2012; and truly, it was amazing, as if you see the characters and the locations in person. At present, just waiting for the official release of Finding Nemo 3D in our local theaters."
