JR Late Night Blogs: Music Videos of the Year 2017

JR's Music Videos of the Year - 2016

It has been 7 years since JR released his very first Music Videos of the Year list way back 2010. Down memory lane, JR lists the 20 of the best music videos the year has to offer with 5 honorable mentions being made. In this year's edition of the list, JR restructures the list to have 10 of the best or let's just say JR's definitive music videos for the year but for the first time, JR will not have his honorable mentions included in this blog. However, all records or statistics mentioned continue to date back from JR's very first list.

JR selects on a wide array of music which have their own corresponding videos from the year that was 2017. JR's pick for the top Music Video of the Year 2017 comes from Ed Sheeran's numerous releases for the year. His "Perfect" earned worldwide success just recently but even before that, in the local Philippines, the song was already a huge success dominating the air waves in the country. The second spot goes to this year's winner of the MTV Video Music Awards, "HUMBLE." by Kendrick Lamar. Why #2? While the list is named Music Videos of the Year, JR ranks the music videos based on music (60%) more than video (40%). While HUMBLE.'s video might look better, Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" song complemented by its beautiful narrative video was for JR more striking, meaningful and an emotion-grabber. The top two are greatly of different genres and for the first time even JR lists a hip hop song at a record high of #2. JR is not much of a hip hop fan, so to make it to JR's list, the top 5 even, just means you are special and really one of his favorites for the year. Way back 2011, however, JR lists the first hip hop video within the top 5, "Lighters" by Bad Meets Evil, making Kendrick Lamar second from the genre within the yearly top 5. "HUMBLE." by Kendrick Lamar hits a record high of top 2 for the Hip Hop genre. The question is if we will have a Music Video of the Year that is of Hip Hop or of pure Rap genre in the future. In JR Late Night Blogs' history, only Pop and House (Electronic) genres nagged the highest spot in the list. This year belongs, however, to Ed Sheeran, who continues the Pop genre trend for the top 1 spot, and Dua Lipa who both have two entries in this year's list. JR won't mention any other entries in this introduction. Behold, we start with JR's master listing of the best music videos of 2017. Sorry, no Despacito in this list.

Summary of the List:

JR's MUSIC VIDEOS OF THE YEAR - 2017 METHODOLOGY:
  1. For a music and its corresponding music video to qualify in the list, the music must be meaningful and airwave dominating for the year. It must be a favorite earworm amongst all. The video must be aesthetically beautiful and innovative. (60% Song, 40% Video)
  2. Songs which doesn't have their corresponding music video, however, are disqualified in the selection process. Even lyric videos are not anymore allowed to be in the list.
  3. In order to qualify as a 2017 music video, the music videos in the list must have been released worldwide on YouTube between 01 January 2017 to 31 December 2017 and must be available in the Philippines for viewing. No local entries, however, are qualified.
  4. To make the selection of entries easier, only music videos with more than 100,000,000 views are qualified to be in the list.
  5. All YouTube views in the list were as of 05 January 2018. All numbers have been rounded up to the nearest millions (to accommodate possible view increase within the day of blog release).

"I know I have met an angel in person, she looks perfect
I don't deserve this, you look perfect tonight"

The year 2017 definitely belongs to Ed Sheeran's wide array of future classics that are real-to-life and tearjerkers. Speaking of tearjerkers, Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" is JR's selection as the best the year 2017 has to offer. "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran is definitely perfect - sorry for the pun. The lyrics are descriptive of that special someone we may all have or dream of and that's why it's so memorable. I know that many couples out there remember their special someone because of this song due to how relatable some lyrics are to that same special someone. I attribute it to, of course, that special love I may have found right now. I'll always remember that person because of this song right here. So, I thank you Ed Sheeran for this. For his first time in JR's Music Videos of the Year list, Ed Sheeran debuts at the highest spot there is.

This is the debut entry of Ed Sheeran in JR's Music Videos of the Year list.

"Bitch Sit Down, Be Humble"

This is the first time I really appreciated a song full of social commentary as presented by its anti-conformist lyrics and symbolic video. With a modernistic world with people having a change in viewpoints due to the rise of social media and technology, "HUMBLE." reminds everyone the importance of simplicity in all its glory. Suggesting a walk down Kendrick Lamar's memory lane, the songs lyrics are just as beautiful as it's highly-stylized music video that is truly the best this modern age has to offer. The music video, in fact, in itself is a masterpiece which has too much scenes that are artistic. I just can't control my awe in the scenes that involve Lamar's biking, Lamar's dinner table scene, Lamar in a sea of bald men and the slowly moving camera which shows a scene in different perspectives. The scene involving the ass with stretchmarks might be off but is sync with the song's message of being confident with our own bodies. "HUMBLE." might be the best Hip Hop song I have heard in my entire lifetime and remains my favorite in the genre. Well, as complex as how the lyrics seem, it's message of simplicity and being all too natural is sexy.

This is the debut entry of Kendrick Lamar in JR's Music Videos of the Year list.

Dua Lipa taught us new rules that are important in dealing with those people who might just use us for their own personal agenda. "New Rules" is a song which raises women to new heights by being purely positive after a break-up. It's a reminder of making decisions carefully before doing an action. Dua Lipa's song is the summary of all advices we receive from friends when dealing with our own fucked up relationships.

This is the debut entry of Dua Lipa in JR's Music Videos of the Year list.

"Do we need somebody just to feel like we're alright?
Is the only reason you're holding me tonight
'Cause we're scared to be lonely?"

Well, we all have those fights at some point but we make-up and be okay again to that person we love. The message is clear we are just scared to be lonely so we can't just leave that person who serves as our company at the midst of our loneliness at various points of our lives. Well, to be honest, I'm torn apart on choosing between "Scared To Be Lonely" and "There For You" to be in this' year's list but I chose the former for its artistic music video depicting the idea of lonelines in an aesthetic but symbolic way.

This is the debut entry of Martin Garrix and the 2nd of Dua Lipa in
JR's Music Videos of the Year list.

Is it really easy to say goodbye? As this Sam Smith song goes, as long as you get used to things then yes its easy. Many anticipated Sam Smith's long-awaited album this year, and this song has been an amazing treat. The video presents us with all forms of romantic relationships, may it be straight or of the same sex. All of them, in fact, presenting that display of affection that seems to make goodbye actually difficult. You'll definitely feel with all the couples in this music video.

This is the 2nd entry of Sam Smith in JR's Music Videos of the Year list.

"And I miss the way you make me feel, and it's real
We watched the sunset over the castle on the hill"

We always reminisce that time when we have those closest of friends that at one point we wonder how they are now. Ed Sheeran just did that with this ballad on possibly how those people he grew up with are now. "Castle on the Hill" is a personal favorite. It was really hard for me to actually just select one out of "Perfect" and "Castle on the Hill," so I had to place them both in this year's list due to how both the songs are great amongst the many releases of Ed Sheeran this year.

This is the 2nd entry of Ed Sheeran in JR's Music Videos of the Year list.

"I just wanna be part of your symphony
Will you hold me tight and not let go?"

Will you be part of my symphony? Do you feel all the feels that this video has to give?
It's just recently I've seen this music video upon a recommendation by a friend. He never failed me with this one. This music video uses a gay couple living their lives like a normal couple until you learn that one gets reported dead to their partner. The symphony he does is a dedication to that lost love of his life. I never taught that such beautiful song can be interpreted in a way that is all emotion-grabbing.

This is the debut entry of Clean Bandit and the debut entry of Zara Larsson in
JR's Music Videos of the Year list.

"I love it when you go crazy
You take all my inhibitions
Baby, there's nothing holding me back"

Shawn Mendes is the only artist returning in this year's version of the list with a song coming from the same album of his entry from last year. From a rank of #10 with his "Treat You Better", Shawn Mendes reaches a high of #8 with his "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back." A video reminiscent of last year's "Closer" by the Chainsmokers, "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" seems more realistic with their various road dates. This video made me easily fall in love with its accompanying song that I also relate with that special love we get to experience those special moments in life.

This is the 2nd entry of Shawn Mendes in JR's Music Videos of the Year list.

"Don't wanna wake up one day wishing that we done more
I wanna live fast and never look back, that's what we here for
Don't wanna wake up one day wondering where'd it all go"

This song remains my most played from all my Apple devices at 594 plays. With an earworm song, I first came to hear of the song when a friend of mine just kept playing it on his laptop. I got somewhat addicted to it due to its tone. Well, the music video doesn't also fail showing us picturesque sceneries that are set near the sea. Another video that also reminded me of the music video of "Closer" by The Chainsmokers.

This is the debut entry of Jonas Blue and the debut entry of William Singe in
JR's Music Videos of the Year list.

"I'm sorry, the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now.
Why? Oh, 'cause she's dead!"

This list isn't complete without Taylor Swift's iconic "Look What You Made Me Do" video. A shout out to the many critics, bashers and negative experiences of Taylor Swift from the past, "Look What You Made Me Do" is a fitting comeback for Taylor Swift who took a short hiatus from music. There are too many references here like Katy Perry's lookalike, Swift's battle with the various streaming companies, Taylor Swift's eight exes, Taylor Swift's past alter egos, and Taylor Swift's ending "I very much like to be excluded from this narrative" line (in reference to her response to Kanye West's release "Famous". Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do" is purely referential to her personal life looking into how she responds to the various issues she has been involved.

This is the 4th entry of Taylor Swift in JR's Music Videos of the Year list.

We anticipate the likes of Charlie Puth, Justin Timberlake and Selena Gomez releasing potential hits which might make their return in JR's list. We are also looking forward for releases by Camila Cabello ("Havana"), Liam Payne ("Strip That Down"), and Louis Tomlinson ("Back To You"), who all have released hits in the past year to possibly finally enter in JR's list. Well, we never now until we see what's in store for music in 2018.
