JR Late Night Blogs: Filipino Movies of the Year 2017

JR's Filipino Movies of the Year 2017

For the first time ever since its inception, JR Late Night Blogs is releasing its own list of best local movies in pursuit of recognizing efforts of the Philippine cinema industry. 2017 was a great year for Filipino movies spanning those entries from the Metro Manila Film Festival held last 25 December 2016 to 07 January 2017 (3 movies in the list) and the landmark Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino held last 16 to 22 August 2017 (3 movies in the list). 2017 was a great year for Filipino movies and JR presents to you 8 which stood out amongst all releases from the past year.

JR's pick for the top Filipino Movie of the Year 2017 comes from yesteryear's amazing line-up of MMFF movies. Die Beautiful is one of the best movies from the said film festival, transgressing the usual comedies using satire and the darkest of comedies to create an amazing story about the Filipino gay beautyscape. Speaking of dark comedy, the second spot goes to Patay Na Si Hesus which is reminiscent of the typical Filipino family. While the top two slots already are comedy films, this year's list include three usually considered as your Filipino romantic comedy, one horror movie, a documentary, and a teenage drama. Majority of this year's list are indie flicks. From JR's collection of movie reviews, five have been given masterpiece scores. Now, we start with JR's master listing of the best movies from the Philippines.

"The Best Gay Film In Philippine Cinema History"
Die Beautiful is purely a masterpiece remaining one of the few evidences that there is hope in the yearly Metro Manila Film Festival. Die Beautiful's story complemented by its very talented actors proves that a taboo topic in Filipino culture can be used as an amazing source material for Philippine cinema. Die Beautiful explores the back story of a gay pageant enthusiast during the entirety of his funeral where he dawns a different celebrity appearance each night of his wake pre-determined and designed by his loyal best friend.

"Remind Me How Witty And Crazy My Own Mom Is..."
That's true, Patay Na Si Hesus isn't your common comedy film filled with too much jokes and laughs. It actually goes to define the typical Filipino family and using the setting to make you relate with how fun and sometimes dysfunctional the Filipino family is with their culture and various beliefs. Patay Na Si Hesus brings us to the Visayas where a family spearheaded by a foul-mouthed yet loving mother gathers her uncaring children on a road trip from Cebu to Dumaguete to attend the funeral of their father who left them for another woman.

"No Wonder It Won Best Picture"
Documentaries are not usually shown mainstream in Philippine cinemas, lucky indeed if they do. Sunday Beauty Queen got the opportunity to be shown in the Metro Manila Film Festival nagging the first time a documentary entered the said film festival. It earned a huge following during the festival season even earning the festival's Best Picture award without question. Sunday Beauty Queen is definitely unique, it isn't fictional but instead documents the real and unedited lives of Filipina OFWs living in Hong Kong who organize and enter numerous beauty pageants to sustain addition income for their families.

"An Allegory to the Issue of Drug-Related Deaths in Our Country"
Though not acclaimed critically, Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B remains a personal favorite from the past year. The only horror film to make this year's list, Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B explores the country's very own horror icon, Manananggal, to indirectly target the country's issue on undocumented drug-related deaths. With outstanding special and practical effects, Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B seems so realistic and no holds barred in all its explicit scenes involving the Manananggal who engage in sex before killing its victims and labeling them as drug addicts.

"Not All Great Movies Need A Happy Ending..."
While your average Filipino romantic comedy always end up to have the ending that you are rooting for, you'll get damned for knowing the ending behind this film that is really unexpected and tragic. 100 Tula Para Kay Stella, as the title defines, is about the progress of how 100 poems are being made by a stuttering young man for his supposed love interest. The premise sounds cute but their various struggles in life ended in a "La La Land"-like ending, they don't end up with one another despite their feelings for each other.

"Kung Kailan Ka Bulag, Doon Mo Ako Nakita"
Another tragic romantic Filipino film, Kita Kita gained public attention through social media due to an unorthodox story starred by actors that aren't really prominent in the industry (but believe me, now they are). With financial backing from Piolo Pascual himself, you know that this movie is special. Kita Kita brings us to Japan where a diagnosed temporarily blind Filipina gets wooed by your hopeless romantic "kababayan" in the beautiful district of Sapporo in Japan. Kita Kita is an exceptional Filipino romance film that seems so optimistic but like this lists' Top 5 film, it doesn't really have a happy ending.

"Make It Hard"
I like films that can be interpreted in so many ways. 2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten makes use of a relatable demographic, the typical Filipino student. This film, however, brings us back in time to a rural school setting in Pampanga to explore the budding friendship between a young Filipino lad with a half-Filipino half-foreign breed which soon turns out to be a metamorphosis for the former towards revealing his true identity. While I interpreted the film as the succumbing of the Filipino towards American influence, 2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten bags too much symbolism for its viewers to explore. And for that, it is a highly recommended pick for your literature class.

Cast Overview:
Joshua Garcia, Julia Barretto, Ronnie Alonte

"Ang Katangahang Di Pinalalagpas"
Well, I'll end this list with a soon to be Star Cinema classic. The story of Vince and Kath came to public prominence as being the first text-serye to have been followed by millenials on social media. The movie makes use of the same for its reference having the same characters and with some familiar scenes, but the movie remains different having an additional James into the mix and focusing more on the budding romance between Vince and Kath during the teenage years. Vince and Kath and James explores the idea of "pagpapakatanga" in love.
