JR Late Night Blogs: Movies of the Year 2017

JR's Movies of the Year 2017

Here comes the big one, JR's annual listing of the 10 best movies of the year. From 2010's original list of 20 movies, we lessen it down to just the 10 of JR's highly reviewed, a definitive list of the best indeed of 2017. For the first time, we won't be having any honorable mentions in JR's Movies of the Year list, and such will probably be the case in JR's future releases of this blog. All records or statistics mentioned here stand and continue to date back from JR's very first list.

2017 has been a great year for horror, three of this year's entries are horror flicks and for the first time, we have a horror movie nagging the top spot in JR's annual list. "Get Out" is named as JR's Movie of the Year 2017. A movie that depicts racial relations in America but on a horrific setting, "Get Out" is one of the most highly praised film of the past year making it a possibility of a Best Picture nod in the 2018 Academy Awards. JR loves horror so much and this film is the best so far this modern age has the offer. In fact, "Get Out" is the first original non-sequel film to be ranked at the top spot in JR's list. From all past lists of JR's Movies of the Year, the top spot has always been named towards a sequel movie from a blockbuster franchise or universe (2016: "Captain America Civil War" from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 2015: "Jurassic World" from the Jurassic Park franchise, 2013: "The Hunger Games Catching Fire" from The Hunger Games franchise, 2012: "Skyfall" from the James Bond franchise, 2011: "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" from the Harry Potter franchise, 2010: "Toy Story 3" from the Toy Story franchise). Two other horror movies are in this year list ranked at #3 and #9. Way back 2016, we also have three horror movies in the list making this year a consecutive great year for horror.

Second place goes to La La Land, the failed "Best Picture" winner against "Moonlight". The question is why did JR list the movie only this year. The answer is simple, it got only its wide release in the Philippines last January 2017 despite it being released in the United States on December 2016. All films in this list are based on their wide screening in the Philippines as such is the country of origin of this blog.

Marvel still continues to be in JR's list for the 7th consecutive time with Thor: Ragnarok entering at Top 10. This is the first time, however, since 2010 that Marvel doesn't have an entry within the Top 5 after the past 5 lists had one (2011: Captain America The First Avenger at #5, 2012: The Avengers at #3, 2013: Iron Man 3 at #2, 2015: Avengers Age of Ultron at #5, and 2016: Captain America Civil War at #1) Way back 2010, Marvel has Iron Man 2 at #11.

As 2016 had Captain America as its biggest star, 2017 hails a hero against racism.

"The Real Horrors of the African American Experience "
Who said social issues can't be an amazing source material for a horror movie. Well, Jordan Peele just created one with this horrific masterclass from 2017. Reminiscent and an ode to classic horror flicks, Get Out brings us to a black man's visit towards his white girlfriend's mansion in what appears to be a set-up for him to become the body or host for another elderly white man or woman's mind or brain. Get Out is a plot on the idea of playing God to enforce immortality of humans. With use of symbolism reflective of racial relations towards African Americans in the United States, Get Out is not your ordinary horror movie that banks on scary ghosts or haunted houses but rather on social issues which continue to haunt our society up to this day. Jordan Peele includes this film in a genre called "social thrillers" which he plans to expand in the future. Get Out is hands down the best movie of 2017.

"City of Stars, Are You Shining Just For Me?"
That line defined everything what La La Land is all about. With two hopeless talented young individuals trying their shot at fame in the famed Los Angeles (City of Stars), La La Land explores the idea of choosing your own destiny that would affect either your love or career in either the most positive or most negative sense. We have a hopeless actress frequently rejected at every casting auditions she's entered and a failed pianist who just can't get a shot at showing his personal love of jazz to the world. While they both have successful careers in the end, it just seems they are really not meant to be (or are they, as suggested by the final tearjerking minutes of the film, one of the best plot twists done in film). La La Land has the most beautiful set pieces with amazing song numbers that are just eye and ear candy. The movie is ambitiously done remaining a personal favorite in the musical genre of movies.

"Yeah, You'll Definitely Float Too"
A hefty dose of nostalgia indeed as Stephen King's It got a retelling to a new age of cinemagoers consisting of millenials that haven't even seen the original. While the original It miniseries of 1990 was already good, the new and upgraded one really made me interested in the master of horror, Stephen King. (I even bought the book as my curiosity was big in this one.) In development hell for almost 5 years, It finally made its presence known this year in one of the best horror films in recent memory. It brings us to a group of young kids going towards their teenage years who are tested and scared by Pennywise the Clown, a clown more interested on devouring these kids' souls than using their bodies for his own personal use. The clown goes into hibernation for 27 years until he feasts again to sustain such need. I didn't become scared of clowns after watching this film but more on the different "fears" that were presented to the kids on this film.

"Artificially Intelligent 2.0"
A highly-stylized future presented by none other than Blade Runner 2049. Like La La Land, Blade Runner 2049 is another film which you would like for the most colorful and beautiful set pieces and of course, Ryan Gosling. Bringing us 32 years into the future with replicants that are already close or undistinctive to the appearance of human beings, Blade Runner 2049 explores the revolution of what it truly means to be a human being. With blade runners tasked to kill or destroy obsolete generations of replicants, one blade runner soon investigates the reproduction of one which was before taught to be impossible. Such idea of reproduction common to human life is highly sought out for by a tyrannical chief of the producers of replicants. I have a lot of unanswered questions after this film that made me want to research more on my own. In such a short time, I treated replicants as a real existing entity due to my inquisitiveness about them. This is the second time when playing God is put into fruition.

"Never Forget The Dead"
Pixar just did it yet again with this future animation classic. The idea of death has many times played into animation movies but this is the first time that I liked it making me even idealize what is really there after death. Coco is a take on Mexico's annual Day of the Dead where one kid gets the chance to go to the most colorful land of the dead, meet his family (dead relatives), meet his dead singing idol, hang out with an almost forgotten individual, ride super majestic spirit animals and more. Coco is an experience of death in the most artistic sense. The idea of not forgetting your dead relative really plays a great importance here. Coco is another Pixar masterpiece that is full of emotions and morals worth seeing by everyone.

"Flawless, Hope for the DC Extended Universe"
Just woah! With DCEU's best film to date, Wonder Woman creates fate for DC fans in a world where Marvel always takes the center stage for making the best superhero movies in the market. Remaining as one of the iconic heroes there are, Wonder Woman is an icon for women worldwide, a persona of strength and power idolized by so many of then and current generation. This 2017 outing of Wonder Woman explores her roots prior to joining the Justice League defeating the mythical villain Ares but having her love killed along the battle. A heartbreaking moment in superhero history that was as you can't help but feel the vulnerability of Wonder Woman, a feature that Marvel heroes are humanistically known for. This first solo live-action feature of the famed superhero remains one of the best superhero films in history, just runner-up to Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight series in the best DC movies there are.

"All Hail Caesar! Morality At Its Finest"
Well, I haven't watched the first two outings of this very popular movie franchise but the experience of seeing War for the Planet of the Apes was already understandable just by watching it standalone. With too many symbolisms reminiscent of scenes from the bible and history, War for the Planet of the Apes is a recommended tool for synopsis by students inclined with literature and film. The message of this film is clear, to protect and not to threaten Mother Earth's environment and creation. The movie gave me goosebumps from start to finish for how inspiring Caesar's revolution is, a reflection of many revolutions of humanity in the past.

"Tale As Old As Time"
Out of the many live-action adaptations of classic animation films by Disney, this one is my favorite. Beauty and the Beast is a reimagining of the original with new scenes and twists incorporated to make the experience new to those who have seen the 1991 film and memorable to those who are just going to see the tale as old as time for the very first time. We have a very beautiful Belle saving her father from the capture of the cursed Beast, who formerly was the head of the household of a lively mansion. I recommend you watch the original for you to appreciate how the ensemble cast of household materials was given life in this version of Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont's "Beauty and the Beast". Beauty and the Beast is the highest-grossing film worldwide of 2017 as of the moment with $1,263,521,126 box office and also holds the record for the highest-grossing film in Philippine history with more than Php 670,000,000 box office. (Star Wars: The Last Jedi threatens to beat the first mentioned record standing at $1,222,851,360 worldwide box office at the moment.)

"The Murderous Roots of the Creepy Doll Named Annabelle"
Who knew that a movie spawned about the creepy murderous doll Annabelle, which was only seen shortly in the first Conjuring film, could be a critical and financial success in the industry. The first Annabelle film help create the now popular "Conjuring" universe, an idea which was first seen in Marvel's own outing of their vast gallery of superheroes, which is inclined to the different cases investigated or handled by the famous paranormal experts, Ed and Lorraine Warren. Annabelle: Creation is not, however, a real documented story of the doll Annabelle but rather a unique vision to create Annabelle's origins. This horror flick is full of jump scares that really freaked me out. Such is to look out for in this underrated horror movie. The Conjuring 2, though, remains my most favorite out of all movies from The Conjuring Universe.

"Thor May Be The Strongest Avenger After All"
It was hard for me to select from Spider-Man or Thor to be placed in this year's movies of the year but I had to select the one I had a better experience among the though reflective of the scores I given them. Thor: Ragnarok is a combination of Marvel's two iconic comic storylines - Thor's Ragnarok storyline and The Hulk's Planet Hulk storyline. This film made me appreciate the characters of Thor and The Hulk respectively which are overpowered by Iron Man and Captain America in almost all ensemble Marvel Avengers films. Thor: Ragnarok was a fun experience for 2017, comedic, dramatic and cute.

2017 banks on several amazing movies most especially in the horror genre. We anticipate several movie releases in 2018. For horror, we anticipate "The Nun" from The Conjuring Universe and the final confrontation between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers in "Halloween". We also have several sequels such as "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald", "The Incredibles 2", "Mission: Impossible 6" and "Wreck-It-Ralph 2". Well, of course, we won't leave out Marvel's releases of the "Black Panther" and the highly anticipated "Avengers: Infinity War". 2018 has gotta be another amazing year for movies.

This has been the 2017 Edition of JR Late Night Blogs' Movies of the Year.
