"A Horrific Valentines Date"

The Day After Valentines' is a massacre to my high set of expectations due to its awkward acting, forced emotions and bad story. Horrific indeed, that it will never match the grandeur of 2017's Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino entry, 100 Tula Para Kay Stella.

The Day After Valentines' tackles the crazy (fucked) up lives of both Lani and Kai. Both of which are struggling with their own personal demons. Kai having to face the reality of being ignored by his ex-girlfriend and also a failed catching up with his family in Hawaii while Lani having to cope with both his childhood horror and a failed attempt at love. Both supposedly (or possibly) are to fall in love with one another until they're faced with the reality that they may not be meant for each other.

My expectations are really high on this one since the movie set before by Bela and JC was for me a masterpiece in its own right (I gave 100 Tula Para Kay Stella a 10/10). I felt the movie was rushed that the sympathy I should be having for the characters was not really there. It's a shame that even the good intentions of using baybayin in the film was not a saving grace. Not even the beautiful landscape that is Hawaii and it's amazing culture would save this film. Also, shaky cam may be a style some films use to give some sense of feel (or thrill) but this film is an example where it doesn't really work. I definitely don't recommend a film that would make (and even a few of the audience) say, "yun na yun?".
