Ann Curry leaves the Today Show, Mark Zuckerberg opens an initial public offering for Facebook, Carly Mae Jepsen's 'Call Me Maybe' Effect, and CJ Corona convicted; those are some of June 2012's Headlines. June 2012 was full of controversies especially in the world of politics, media and sports. It was recently reported by NBC that their lead morning show anchor Ann Curry is to be replaced by her co-anchor Savannah Guthrie due to losing ratings from rival morning TV show ABC's Good Morning America. Manny Pacquiao was also involved in one of the publicly-described 'most controversial fight' in the history of boxing as he loses to Timothy Bradley who has extended his undefeated record to 29-0. Jerry Sandusky was found guilty on 45 of 48 charges on child sex abuse; he is sentenced to 442 years in prison which would be a life-sentence for him. China is still not over the Philippines pushing the boundaries and demanding that the Scarborough Shoal is part of their territorial rights. With some controversies come good news from Google, they are probed to release their own tablet namely Nexus 7, which would compete with the Samsung Galaxy Tablet and the Apple IPad. It's June 2012 in review.

JULY 2012 MEDIA:
ANN CURRY JUST LEFT TODAY SHOW
Today show co-host Ann Curry broke down in tears as she said goodbye on NBC's morning show, apologizing to fans for not being able to 'take the ball all the way to the finish line'. Ann was accompanied on the sofa by Al Roker, Natalie Morales, and Matt Lauer - who supported her as she bid her tearful farewell, despite rumors he was the driving force in ousting her from the co-host chair. She said: 'This is not as I expected to ever leave this couch after 15 years, but I am so grateful, especially to all of you who watch because Matt and I - and everyone who sits on this couch - we often call ourselves a family, but YOU are the real Today show family'. The decisive moment came in the week of April 9 when GMA ended Today’s 16-year winning streak with 5.147 million viewers compared to Today‘s 5.134 million, a majority of 13,000.
JR's In-Depth Review:
"I really felt bad knowing that Ann Curry was leaving the NBC Today Show because of losing an amount of audience to ABC's Good Morning America. From 08 June 2011 - 28 June 2012, it was only a year of Ann Curry's hosting the Today Show. It was really a short amount of time for Ann Curry to prove herself on television. I think she did great knowing the fact that she has been a TV news correspondent for 15 years. Despite this, Ann Curry was reported to become Today's Anchor-at-Large and NBC News National and International Correspondent. I just wish that NBC will have their ratings move up to prove that this move was really a good one. I also wish Ann Curry good luck in her future endeavors with NBC News."
JULY 2012 INTERNATIONAL:
GRANDMOTHER BULLIED ON SCHOOL BUS
A video posted on YouTube of a 68-year-old grandmother being mercilessly bullied by a group of children on a school bus has resulted in an online collection of $375,000 (£240,000) being raised by outraged viewers. Karen Klein, a school bus monitor in New York, was vilely taunted and tormented by a gang of four 13-year-old boys. The shocking 10-minute video shows the disgusting tirade the youngsters directed at the tearful granny, calling her 'fat,' 'ugly' and a 'troll'. As she cried, the children jabbed her. One student told her: "You don't have a family because they all killed themselves because they don't want to be near you." Heartbreakingly, Ms Klein's oldest son killed himself 10 years ago.
JR's In-Depth Review:
"Bullying is a serious issue revolving around teens nowadays. It is a problem that schools from around the world are pushing to an end. It was June 2012 that a bullying incident would break the hearts of many worldwide. The incident's victim was a grandmother who was working as a school bus monitor in a school in New York. The video was posted on YouTube and enraged many social media users, including me, especially the part that the students made mention of her family members killing themselves because they don't want to be near her. If I were to be a member of the school board, I would want those students to be expelled and learn from what they have done. It's just unfair to see those students still going to school not learning from those evil things they have done. I think sorry is not enough for what they have done. It's just heart-breaking especially when you see an old woman being bullied by young adults considering that a lot of teens are committing suicide because of bullying."
JULY 2012 INTERNATIONAL:
JERRY SANDUSKY FOUND GUILTY OF CHILD SEX ABUSE
Jerry Sandusky was found guilty Friday night on 45 of 48 counts of child sexual molestation and faces up to 442 years in prison. A jury of Sandusky's Centre County, Pa., neighbors determined that the former Penn State defensive coordinator sexually abused children over a 15-year period, using his stature as a local coaching hero and his position with the Second Mile charity to target and then violate at-risk kids from the area. The jury deliberated for about 20 hours after a trial that stretched across eight days at Centre County Courthouse. The jury foreman read the counts and said "guilty" on six consecutive counts before saying "not guilty" for the first time. He read all 48 counts.
JR's In-Depth Review:
"Many teachers or school officials in the United States are involving themselves in sexual relationships with their students. It's very fortunate that these incidents are not prevalent in Asia, especially the Philippines. It is just not right that schools will be the hiding place of those desires of some adults. I just don't think that schools are made for pleasures. It is a tome of knowledge therefore it is made for students to learn and understand. I am disgusted by what had happened in Pennsylvania State University."
JULY 2012 PHILIPPINES - LOCAL:
CHIEF JUSTICE CORONA CONVICTED
Twenty senators, including Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile, found Chief Justice Renato Corona guilty of Article 2 of the impeachment complaint filed against him pertaining to his failure to disclose to the public his statement of assets, liabilities, and net worth. Only three voted to acquit Corona and they were Senators Joker Arroyo, Miriam Defensor-Santiago and Ferdinand “Bong-Bong” Marcos Jr. “The Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, having tried Renato Corona, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, upon three Articles of impeachment charged against him by the House of Representatives, by a guilty vote of 20 senators representing at least two-thirds of all the members of the Senate, has found him guilty of the charge under Article II of the said articles of impeachment,” said Enrile after he cast his ‘guilty’ vote for Corona. “Now, therefore… Renato Corona is hereby convicted of the charge against him in Article II of the articles of impeachment, So ordered,” Enrile added.
JR's In-Depth Review:
"Finally, the Filipino people got what they want. Observing what have been prevailing in the justice system of the Philippines, it can be seen that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines is biased in deciding on some of the country's most critical issues. Let us enumerate some of those factors that might made him decide unaccordingly. #1, he has been appointed by her excellency, former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. #2, he earned a lot of money during his tenure as a member of the Philippine Supreme Court and have not stated it in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth. And #3, he always don't agree with the stands of the current Philippine President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino on various projects and issues. If the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Departments of the Philippines would not work together then progress or the 'matuwid na daan' cannot be achieved."
JULY 2012 PHILIPPINES - LOCAL:
CHINA OVER SCARBOROUGH SHOAL
Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea has become the bone of contention between the Philippines and China. Both countries claim ownership of that barren shoal which is called Panatag by the Philippines and Huangyan by China. Scarborough Shoal is composed of islets, reefs and atoll. Beijing based its claim in history citing Yuan Dynasty map of 1279 which included the shoal as part of its territory. The Philippines on the other hand premised its claim on geography since it is only about 123 nautical miles or 198 kilometers off Subic Bay while it is 350 nautical miles from the nearest shore of China. The Philippines asserted that the shoal is within its 200-nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and therefore it has the legitimate right to explore and use its maritime resources in accordance with the UN Convention on the Laws of the Sea (UNCLOS).
JR's In-Depth Review:
"China has become a World Superpower. It has been dominating the World Economy beating the United States. Forbes also recently listed Hu Jintao as the World's Most Powerful Person, ahead of Barack Obama, way back 2010. Despite the country's dominance and power, China has no right over territories of other countries. Those territories that they claim as theirs has been fought over by the territory's owner. The Scarborough Shoal has been part of the Philippine territory since 1965 as Philippine Navy constructed iron towers near the area. In addition, the Scarborough Shoal is just 220 kilometers from Palauig, Zambales of the Philippines. At the time when hell breaks lose in the group of islands, I hope that what is stated in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) would transpire."
JULY 2012 ENTERTAINMENT:
THE AVENGERS BECOME PART OF BILLION-DOLLAR MOVIE CLUB
With official grosses reporting on Monday, it's official—The Avengers has joined the fabled $1 billion worldwide box office club. The movie reached this level on its 19th day in theaters, which ties the record-breaking pace of Avatar and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (though The Avengers was only playing in the U.S. for ten of those days). It currently ranks 12th on the all-time worldwide chart with $1.000.4 billion, and by the end of next weekend it will move up to fourth place behind Avatar, Titanic and Deathly Hallows Part 2.
JR's In-Depth Review:
"Superhero movies had been dominating the box office charts. The Dark Knight (2008) earned more than a billion dollars. Both Iron Man films earned more than 1.2 billion dollars. The Spiderman trilogy earned more than 2 billion dollars, making it the most successful superhero movies series in history if we exclude the earnings by the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies combined. The lesson here is make a movie about a superhero and BOOM you get a box-office hit. Marvel's The Avengers has already earned $1,455,361,732 making it the Third Highest Grossing Film Worldwide of All Time."
JULY 2012 ENTERTAINMENT:
THE "CALL ME MAYBE" EFFECT
Carly Rae Jepsen busted out onto the scene with her breakout hit “Call Me Maybe.” The fellow Canadian has been opening for Justin Bieber and is coming out with a new album of her own, but she’s now opening up in an interview with The Associated Press about feeling pressure to release more music, her target audience and more. Fox News reports that Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” has been No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart for five weeks, so her follow-up singles have the potential to be overshadowed by it. “I just feel a pressure to put out music that I feel really proud of and that feels like me, and there's definitely a limited amount of time to get that done well and get that done right,” she explained. “But I think it's close. It's been sort of a fun project to be writing on the plane and in the hotel room at night.” As for her target audience, she automatically has a teen follow thanks to Bieber fans, but she insists “I'm never writing music thinking, "This is who it's for, that's who it's for." I think the exciting process is just to write music and make it feel honest, make it feel like it's hitting in all the right spots and then hope that people like it.”
JR's In-Depth Review:
"Carly Rae Jepsen became a breakout star because of the hit 'Call Me Maybe'. Celebrities from around the world (like Katy Perry and James Franco) have danced to the said hit. The Harvard Baseball Team and Cookie Monster even parodied the song. The song also gained some attention from the Today Show as it was featured in the said show. 'Call Me Maybe' by Carly Rae Jepsen even topped the Billboard Hot 100 Charts putting an end to the eight-week reign of 'Somebody That I Used to Know' by Gotye. The trend started when Justin Bieber advertised the song through his Twitter account. It soon became a viral hit. Despite Carly Rae Jepsen titling the song 'Call Me Maybe', she does not want to give her number to a boy she likes."
JULY 2012 SPORTS:
CONTROVERSIAL LOSS FOR MANNY PACQUIAO
It was Pacquiao's first loss in 16 fights, stretching back to his defeat against Erik Morales in 2005. The defeat all but renders the much-maligned contest with Floyd Mayweather Jr. dead in the water. A rematch is expected to take place between Pacquiao and Bradley on November 10. But many will be calling this one of boxing's great robberies. Mayweather, of course, will have watched the fight from the Clark County jail where he has been sentenced to incarceration for almost three months for domestic violence. He will be grinning from ear to ear. But Pacquiao-Bradley will be remembered as a fight with a strange pattern, and an even stranger result. Pacquiao landed the cleaner, heavier shots until the final third of the fight, when Bradley found his second wind after being dominated from rounds two to eight.
JR's In-Depth Review:
"I was so surprised knowing that Manny Pacquiao have lost to Timothy Bradley in their fight last 10 June 2012. If Manny have won the 10 out of the 12 bouts against Timothy, then he should have won said fight because he had earned more wins than Timothy. But if we look carefully in the situation, we can say that the result may have already been pre-planned with an upcoming rematch this November. Notice the various posters that Timothy Bradley released before their match stating that he and Manny Pacquiao would have a rematch. It's just unfair for those people who paid in favor of Manny. Manny Pacquiao, for me, is ageless and will never backdown a fight. I hope he wins the upcoming rematch to break Timothy's record of 29-0. And when that happens, I hope we get the match we had all been waiting for - Manny Pacquiao VS. Floyd Mayweather. I hope that happens before Manny retires."
JULY 2012 TECHNOLOGY:
FACEBOOK GOES PUBLIC WITH IPO
Facebook co-founder and chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg kicked off the social network's entry into the Nasdaq Stock Market. Zuckerberg rang the open bell from Facebook's headquarters, where the company held an all-night hackathon Thursday night. True to form, the 28-year-old CEO rang the bell wearing a hoodie with a crowd of Facebook employees cheering him on. The screen outside the NASDAQ stock exchange at Times Square in New York displayed a handwritten message from Zuckerberg that read, "To a more open world and connected world." Facebook priced its initial public offering (IPO) Thursday after markets closed. The social network is offering 421,233,615 shares of common stock at $38 per share. Facebook stock is available for trading under the ticker symbol "FB" at 11 a.m. ET. Facebook reports 901 million monthly active users, 300 million photos uploaded per day and 125 billion friendships. An estimated 488 million people access Facebook via mobile products.
JR's In-Depth Review:
"It's high time that Facebook released their own Initial Public Offering. Facebook has become an international brand with more than 900 million users worldwide, the largest brand with the most users worldwide. Despite Facebook never suffering bankruptcy, Facebook opens an opportunity for alot of people for investment in the social media juggernaut. With Mark Zuckerberg already worth $17.5 billion, the Facebook IPO can make him richer, maybe richer than the Google brothers, Larry Page and Sergey Brin and Amazon.com creator, Jeff Bezos. The Facebook IPO can even make alot of millionaires from around the world."
JULY 2012 TECHNOLOGY:
GOOGLE NEXUS 7
Google took the wraps off the first device to run Android 4.1, Jelly Bean: a 7-inch tablet made by Asus, called the Nexus 7. The pint—sized tablet has a 1280 x 800 display, NVIDIA quad-core Tegra 4 processor, and Google claims the tablet will keep kicking for 10 hours of reading or 8 hours of HD video playback on a single charge. The tablet is light. Weighing in at just 340 grams you’re probably not going to notice any extra weight when you throw it in your book bag or purse. The back-lit IPS display is easy to see from a variety of angles, and while some connectivity issues prevented from doing things on the web were able to do on the tablet without an internet connection -– or with a spotty one at times — zipped along. An 8GB version of the tablet is going to run you $199, putting it right on par price-wise with Barnes & Noble’s Nook Tablet and Amazon’s Kindle Fire. It also comes with a $25 credit to the Google Play store to help you get started filling it with apps, and essentially bringing that ultimate device price tag down a bit.
JR's In-Depth Review:
"Google surprises us with some good news as they have finally released their own tablet. Running under the Android OS, the Nexus Tablet would be newest competitor to Apple's iPad and Samsung's Galaxy Tablet. Unlike the other said tablets, Google's Nexus 7 Tablet is truly very cheap. Worth under $200, it is very affordable even to the common man. But with the tablet generation growing, the tablet release of Google may not create a boom that Apple's iPad had done two years ago. I am very excited, however, for the tablet's release in the Philippines; going to buy one."
