JR's Movie Reviews - THE KISSING BOOTH

"Sprucing Something Out of a Very Terrible Kiss"

The actors may look cute (and hot) but the story is just the same old cheap flick you may watch if you're blatantly bored or just into romantic comedies. The Kissing Booth is a terrible idea for its love story that is rushed and for its actors that are weak and bad at acting. There are better romantic flicks to look forward to on Netflix but this isn't one.

The Kissing Booth is just one of those ideas by best friends Elle and Lee to have on their school carnival as fund-raising for their organization. Elle is forced to have Lee's brother, Noah, be a part of it as demand was really there for him. Though failed to have him on it, Elle eventually kisses Noah at The Kissing Booth eventually starting a love story between them that is against the will of Lee as both Lee and Elle had always that rule which forbade Elle to fall in love with Lee's brother. What follows is a chaotic turn of events between Lee, Elle and Noah.

Netflix may have those hits but this definitely is a miss. Though Jacob Elordi and Joey King are amazing in the most physical sense, their acting is just not good and the chemistry between them is weak. I was even looking forward for more screen time from the antagonistic "bitches" as they could have made the movie more interesting. The story isn't a saving grace either. Causing chaos out of something so shallow is just a terrible idea. Having to fall in love with just one kiss and fight over rules set from childhood may be realistic but it doesn't seem to really work out if you would create a sensible movie. Nah, I won't recommend this film just because it has those hot stars you see online.

JR's Movie Reviews - TO ALL THE BOYS I'VE LOVED BEFORE

"A Love Story Written For You"

You may have fallen in love with a few people in your love, hoping for sweet memories to share with one another yet just dream about. One day you decide to write a letter to each one, imaginatively creating a story or an ode but be kept by you as it all just happens to be but a fairy tale not destined to happen. However, what if it did happen, your personal letter might be the key for you to earn that love story you had been praying and dying for all life. Enter the story of Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky...

Lara Jean is not your typical girl-next-door. With those nerdy cute style, she admired 5 different guys who, at the course of her life, entered hers in one way or another. She writes an intimate letter for each one yet not to be sent to them but be kept by her to cherish those feelings of excitement she had when she had a crush on them. What happens is a love story between her and one of those secret crushes she wrote a letter to, Peter. A story that seems to be fake at start but real in the end.

To All The Boys I've Loved Before may not be the most amazing romantic comedy to see on Netflix but it manages to be a recommended one if you want to laugh, be sad and also fall in love. It's a movie where you hope that it can happen in real life because despite how fairy tale it is, you know it can and may happen. The portrayal of Noah Centineo as Peter might have earned him a massive fanbase just recently but let's not forget how awesome Lana Condor was too; she is meant to play a character desired by the book to be awkward yet cute and also relatable. The story is also unique as it explores the reverse concept of what letters are meant to be, to be sent, yet also managing to spruce a creative love story from it. Pop culture references are there and also lines that are meant to feast your heart and mind. Because of this movie, you might just want to create that letter to the one you like too, hoping for a love story the same as Lara Jean.

JR's Movie Reviews - SIGNAL ROCK

⭐️ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ⭐️

"Doing The Unthinkable"

This is definitely a movie that is worth a watch for how it relates to the traditional Filipino provincial lifestyle. A movie which also never fail to expose the poor social and political conditions of our country. Probably my shot at the best Filipino film this year, Signal Rock will leave you with awe upon leaving the cinema inspired that you too can face life's biggest challenges.

Intoy lives in an island where cellular signal is only reached by going to an elevated area formed from rocks. His impoverished family is heavily dependent from his sister married to a foreign national. With Intoy's good looks and charm, he manages to be the go to guy of everyone in their community for every situation they face. One day, Intoy receives a call from his sister needing help against losing custody of her daughter from a very abusive husband. Intoy, by all means, does the unimaginable.

Set in the most beautiful island of Samar, Signal Rock is a melting pot of emotions ready to burst to its audience. Christian Bables is definitely it's highest point well playing the main, Intoy. Everything in the movie is pristine including every side moment for the supporting characters who each have their own personal agenda with Intoy, never losing continuity to the main storyline. These specific moments are an opportunity to identify problems that exist then and now on every barrio of our country. It never loses focuses on the issues of corruption, political dynasty, forced interracial marriage, tsismis culture and the wrong notion of "utang na loob". Every character and every scene has it's own symbolism which is worth a discussion with a friend you may have watched the movie with. Besides my mind, the movie also touched my heart. I can't help but feel down with such a sad ending to a very well fought win. If there's one thing this movie taught me good, it's that anyone can do the unimaginable in the most creative means.

JR's Movie Reviews - THE DAY AFTER VALENTINE'S

The Day After Valentine's
THE DAY AFTER VALENTINE'S
Year of Release: 2018

JR's Rating:  (4.8 out of 10, Not Good)

"A Horrific Valentines Date"

The Day After Valentines' is a massacre to my high set of expectations due to its awkward acting, forced emotions and bad story. Horrific indeed, that it will never match the grandeur of 2017's Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino entry, 100 Tula Para Kay Stella.

The Day After Valentines' tackles the crazy (fucked) up lives of both Lani and Kai. Both of which are struggling with their own personal demons. Kai having to face the reality of being ignored by his ex-girlfriend and also a failed catching up with his family in Hawaii while Lani having to cope with both his childhood horror and a failed attempt at love. Both supposedly (or possibly) are to fall in love with one another until they're faced with the reality that they may not be meant for each other.

My expectations are really high on this one since the movie set before by Bela and JC was for me a masterpiece in its own right (I gave 100 Tula Para Kay Stella a 10/10). I felt the movie was rushed that the sympathy I should be having for the characters was not really there. It's a shame that even the good intentions of using baybayin in the film was not a saving grace. Not even the beautiful landscape that is Hawaii and it's amazing culture would save this film. Also, shaky cam may be a style some films use to give some sense of feel (or thrill) but this film is an example where it doesn't really work. I definitely don't recommend a film that would make (and even a few of the audience) say, "yun na yun?".

JR's Movie Reviews - ANG BABAENG ALLERGIC SA WIFI

"A More Traditional Sense of Love"

Love is kind but love is most definitely patient. Ang Babaeng Allergic sa Wifi is definitely one of the better romantic comedies this millenial generation would relate too. Much with the technology existing in this world, expression of love evolved with it through social media exposure and publicity.

Norma is suffering from a rare disorder of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity, a disorder which causes allergic reaction upon exposure to wifi (or any form of cellular signal). With Norma forced to live in a "wifi-absent" provincial set-up with her lola still living with the past, her boyfriend, Leo, struggles to balance time towards visiting her and towards her basketball lifestyle. Aries, Leo's brother, on the contrary, gives all the possible time he has with Norma to make her feel loved and happy.

While science is still indifferent with the existence of such disorder, the movie makes good use of the idea what if it did exist. In what is probably the best acting performance by Sue Ramirez and Jameson Blake in a movie, Ang Babaeng Allergic sa Wifi is definitely worth giving all the praise as it exceeded expectations by being relatable and also thought-provoking in a much online generation we are in. As much as I expected a happy ever after ending in what seems to be an exciting kilig story for both Norma and Aries, I can't help myself feel torn and heartbroken by such a devastating plot twist that caught me off guard.
