CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA
Year of Release: 2018

JR's Rating:  (9.0 out of 10, Impressive)

"Let Greendale Cast A Spell On You"

Welcome to Greendale, a town of grim and horror plagued with history of witches, the very town that Sabrina Spellman gets to decide whether she fully embraces her dark witch side or sacrifice it for a healthy mortal life with her friends and boyfriend. With an adventure really worth binge-watching, "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" is a worthy addition to your Netflix watchlist but with a heavy warning for its very disturbing content.

While I lived to watch and enjoy the 1990s comedic predecessor on an old tube TV, the 2018 version exceeds the former by a huge margin by just how willing it is to embrace a tone only horror movies can adhere, a rare feat in fact for TV series. The show is well equipped with a cast that fully embodied the characters that are in the series. Aunt Hilda, Aunt Zelda, Ambrose, Harvey, Prudence, Nicholas and Kiernan as Sabrina are just a few that you'll love in the series. Each episode is catered with a dilemma only Sabrina could face and these are what you'll have to anticipate all the way. With all the good mentioned, The series is full of satanic symbolism that might make you uncomfortable along the experience. I, for one, felt sinning upon watching the series; so, I advise you to watch at your own risk. Unlike Riverdale, where despite all the darkness that builds the town you can have high hopes on, Greendale is just full of darkness that there is just pure evil to rely on. So be warned!

"Purely and Simply... Evil"

An epitome of greatness when it comes to the horror genre, "Halloween" established the rules, the cliches we now know of in slasher or serial murderer flicks. It really is one of the most innovative and best horror movies ever made. On the eve of Halloween 1978, the world gave witness to the murder spree of Michael Myers in the town of Haddonfield, Illinois after his successful escape from a mental institution he was held captive for 15 years. Years earlier his captivity he killed his own sister at their own home with a kitchen knife; now he returns as an unstoppable force without any reason, without any purpose. While Michael Myers survives and escapes from all that transpired on the eve of Halloween 1978, he took failure on killing just one, Laurie Strode. The blend of Carpenter's score, the monster that is Michael, the creepy vibe of Haddonfield coupled with excellent acting by Jamie Lee Curtis, John Carpenter successfully gave us one of the most innovative and scariest films ever made. The attention to detail with every set and prop used and line spoke in the film was meticulous. The simplicity of Michael's story made everything pristine and spot-free other than being logical and realistic. Would not have been for "Halloween," we would not have our deepest of admiration for serial killers and masked murderers that came after Michael in film. "Halloween" is the very standard how we should rate and critique horror / slasher films in general.

"The Hunted Becomes The Hunter"

There's a reason why the "Halloween" of 1978, our first glimpse at Michael Myers, remains a masterpiece in its genre. It's the very reason why we love masked serial killers in film. "Halloween" of 2018 comes close to the grandeur of the first movie paying homage to the original by continuing the story of Michael vs Laurie and by incorporating details that are subtle references to the first movie. In this year's "Halloween", the entire slate is clean neglecting all the 9 movies that came after the 1978 classic in an attempt to know if Michael is indeed an immortal boogeyman or Michael can be killed by the same being he haunted years back, Laurie Strode, in a case of the hunted becoming the hunter. When "Halloween" of 1978 pits Michael Myers as the monster, the "Halloween" of 2018 creates the unstoppable force that is Laurie Strode. The question now is whether Laurie would prove to be successful or not. The iconic score, clean and strategic kills and attention to detail, the reasons why we loved the original Halloween is the same reason you'll like this year's Halloween. (Insert Halloween theme here...)

"A House That Feasts On Its Inhabitants"

"The Haunting of Hill House" is so masterfully crafted that I can't help but just applaud and praise it for its innovative take on a horror literary classic. It's rare to see horror on the small screen due to how sensitive some scenes might be for viewers but Netflix provides us an avenue to watch great ones, no holds barred, like this series right here. With a story to binge watch on, the acting, cinematography and some long continuous single shots are just amazing. The scares are clean and well placed that it isn't cheesy but more often shocking, catching you on the most unexpected of times. For this year's Halloween season, I highly recommend watching "The Haunting of Hill House" on Netflix. It's a story where the real killer and villain is a haunted house that just waits to feast upon it's inhabitants. (While watching, try to look out for ghosts hidden at the background of some scenes. It's definitely a treasure hunt while watching this series)

Lady Gaga is definitely a star. Pop culture, music, art, TV and now, film; isn't there anything this superstar can't do. I've been a fan of Lady Gaga ever since she released her first single way back 2008. Her "Star Is Born" movie is a magnus opus worth the chance to see on Lady Gaga's transition to a different persona we never had seen her before. Together with an amazing story crafted and directed by Bradley Cooper, "A Star Is Born" is definitely the film to beat in this year's cinema awards race. Bradley Cooper's film expertise proves he also can make movies aside from just being a part of it. A movie which combines music, celebrity culture, America and love in the best way possible, "A Star Is Born" is outstanding, an achievement worthy of praise.

The Nun
THE NUN
Year of Release: 2018

JR's Rating:  (6.9 out of 10, Average)

"The Defiler, The Profane, The Marquis of Snakes"

It's desecrating and definitely scary. The Nun doesn't disappoint with jumpscares a plenty to haunt you and well-written backstory about the demonic nun from hell. Note, however, this movie is fun if you're up to be horrified but some terrible camerawork doesn't make it really an amazing movie.

Valak is that terrifying demonic nun from hell everyone is talking about. She's profane. She's a defiler. She's the marquis of snakes. Valak is up to spread evil, corrupting people's minds and making them commit the unholy. Going back half a century ago, we visit an abbey in Romania where word of suicide of a nun happened. Sister Irene and Father Burke investigate about the strange occurence to eventually discover about the dark history of a demon summoned many years back. Together with a villager, Maurice, they must face this demon Valak and ultimately condemn her back to hell.

Fans of The Conjuring series really anticipated the film featuring the nun from the second film. It sh*t the pants out of everyone for how terrifying it was. The same goes with this film. There are too many jumpscares to brace yourself, it won't really disappoint you from that reason alone. Two worth mentioning are the ones involving Maurice in the cemetery and Irene happening to see Valak at a mirror. Believe me when I say that all horrific scenes are well acted in an environment which also seem to be a character of its own. The actors and the setting alone are already saving graces. I wouldn't say that this film is a horror gem, however, due to some terrible camerawork that seem to be amateur-ish in taking (the ones that involve running / shaky cam). Also some jumpscares involving Valak doesn't look fine due to not so good editing. The story makes slight sense though as what we expect for continuity with the franchise.

I'm still creeped out by Valak, but despite of that, she's definitely worth a sequel or two of her own.

GOYO: ANG BATANG HENERAL
Year of Release: 2018

JR's Rating:  (9.5 out of 10, Impressive)

"Retelling of Philippine History:
A Question of What Really Makes A Hero"

Duty, Dignity and Sacrifice - three words that describe what it takes to be a hero worth honor and admiration. Anybody can indeed be a hero in their own right; but the distinction will be the willingness to die in defense for the country. The serious question the movie imposes and even history is, did Goyo, our country's supposed youngest general, die a martyr in defense for our country or die to protect Aguinaldo.

Goyo (Gen. Gregorio del Pilar) worked with the late Heneral Luna in his strategic defense of Bulacan against the Americans. Fast forward after the great general's death, Goyo is assigned by President Aguinaldo as the head of Pangasinan under his revolutionary government. It's here where he struggles to balance private life with responsibility, comfort over leadership. With all those charm and good looks, Goyo never fails to capture a girl's heart in every district he gets to visit or assigned to. It was, however, in Pangasinan that an eventual love would spark a change in his ways. With the entry of the Americans in the Philippines, Goyo would lead the army to an exodus towards the highlands to evade potential capture and defeat at the hands of the Americans. It's at Mt. Tirad Pass where he will have his last stand against the Americans.

Going back to the question of the martyrdom of Gen. del Pilar or Goyo, he may have looked like he was in it to protect Aguinaldo and his family but it was undeniable that he worked in defense of our country against the Americans (well in fact even the Spanish way before). It was just that probably, Aguinaldo was his symbol of the country's republic, his demise would mean the ultimate end of what they have been fighting for all along. Too sad though that Goyo fought under the wrong leader who seems to care more of which and whom is loyal to him.

Goyo's bravery will forever be is priceless and very deserving of honor and admiration to this modern generation of youth. You wouldn't name the home of our country's military school as Fort Del Pilar if he never embodied the Philippine army's motto,  Courage, Integrity and Loyalty.

Going to the movie, the movie stayed true to the time it was set in. While we started to see Heneral Luna in Bulacan, we came to learn more of Pangasinan and the culture it comes with it. It's where most of what we see in the movie come to happen. Moving forward, what caught my attention the most though is how beautifully presented the highlands specifically Tirad Pass was. That for me filled me with awe until the battle that would eventually occur there.

It really takes humongous amounts of guts and ambition to follow up a legendary film such as Heneral Luna. Heneral Luna though remains for me the better film of the two due to the influence it has on me after watching it, my empathy for Heneral Luna and his story is very different by how I felt with Goyo and his story in this film. Goyo though stands as a must watch if you're into having a more analytical and critical view of the titular hero. The portrayal by Paulo Avelino is just fitting due to his charm and justice on playing the role. Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral was for me a more personal story towards Goyo than it is towards history.

"Retelling of Philippine History:
A Question of What Really Makes A Patriot"

The marking of a true patriot is his most sincere and most committed love and dedication for the country. No force or  entity will ever have those aspirations and principles be pulled down. A strong conviction will most successfully execute all of what is believed to be right and beneficial to the country. Gen. Antonio Luna is definitely a patriot, all the more dignified by this masterpiece of Jerrold Tarog.

Heneral Luna is truly one aggressive, vicious hell of a guy all the more made stronger by the defense of Article One, "Any person who refuses to follow orders dictated by the General-in-Chief of the Philippine Army will be immediately shot without trial." Being that General-in-Chief, Heneral Luna has that one goal of uniting all Filipino troops to fight off the Americans ending their desire of colonizing the Philippines. Heneral Luna dreams of an American-free Republic, fully independent to lead and decide for itself. It was ironic though, in the end, that Heneral Luna would have his most tragic demise at the hands of his own countrymen. The selfish interests of our country's first President, Emilio Aguinaldo, and his men will eventually have Heneral Luna suffer the same treacherous fate as Bonifacio's. Heneral Luna's plans would have undeniably changed the course of our country's history for the good or even for the better, if and only if he would have fulfilled and executed it.

Heneral Luna is very much worthy of admiration for his fierce and truly brilliant leadership of the army. He modernized the military's way of thinking then in hopes of winning against the Americans. Heneral Luna never dreamt of anything more ambitious than the best of interests for our country. We may see him as "brusko" or "siga" but that wouldn't change how much respect he greatly deserves for being a patriot willing to die for his own motherland. His story is worth the inspiration in fighting the most corrupt and traitorous system of the Philippine government.

The movie, Heneral Luna, gave life to the titular character that we only came to know on history classes and books overshadowed by the familiarity of Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio. The movie gave due justice to how admirable this man really is for believing and never giving up on a principle that isn't for his own but for his country. The portrayal by John Arcilla was the best I've ever seen in any Filipino film proving great movies need not mainstream actors but those with great talent and heart for the character he is playing in. Together with its ensemble cast, Heneral Luna is at the echelons of what really makes the best acting in movies.

I do believe that this movie sparked the eventual rise of Filipino films that justify "quality over quantity." As films post-Heneral Luna are more Filipino dignifying and worthy to be proud of than those films pre-Heneral Luna. In fact, Heneral Luna sparked interest amongst the Filipino's, especially of the youth, towards independent films of historical (and artistic) significance over those which are purely for the laughs and entertainment. Never have I seen such an amazing film made by a Filipino. With the best sets of actors, cinematography, story-telling, and morals, Heneral Luna will stand as the best film (historical or not) ever made in this modern age of Philippine cinema, ambitious and grand in the most glorifying sense.

"Facing the Consequence of Killing a Majestic National Symbol"

It pains me having not watched this treasure from last year's Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino but thank God for Netflix as I was finally able to watch it. Birdshot is the first Filipino film released worldwide on and by Netflix and it deserves to be as it too is a National Symbol that deserves to be witnessed by those who are into cinematic masterpieces. This film is definitely something to be proud of being made as a Filipino.

Birdshot revolves around the consequences of a young girl's (Maya) shooting a Philippine Eagle, the country's National Bird, at a sanctuary near their home. Police officers, Domingo and Mendoza, was assigned by the police to handle the investigation of such case abandoning another sensational case which the officer Domingo was hoping to engage some time with. Initially a way to prove to Maya's father she could stand on her own, the death of the eagle sparked the break down of her family. Birdshot exposes the environmental crises, corruption and police brutality still existing in this country we live in.

(Trivia: Before the Philippine Eagle was declared as our country's National Bird, The Red Maya held that distinctive title. Nice play there by Birdshot.)

The Philippine Eagle is just the most majestic out of all our country's symbols. The movie made me fell in love with the creature who is now struggling for its survival due to deforestation at various areas. It's only hope are sanctuaries (like in the movie) where it can strive for food and shelter.

Going on another spectrum, while the country is still faced with the horror of drugs and rape, we can't hide the more dangerous crimes of corruption and police brutality still prevalent due to it's exposure on news and especially social media. There is still time to work for change just like what Domingo did but it takes huge amount of courage as threats come with it along the way. Hope is always there and we can always be heroes to the most degraded and outcasted in our society.

The movie boasts terrific acting performances by John Arcilla and Mary Joy Apostol. The movie also takes pride with its numerous well taken shots that are just picturesque and awe-inspiring, the one involving the Philippine Eagle is my favorite. The movie risks showing no holds barred violence, and yet they are masterfully and realistically executed. I may have only mentioned a few symbolisms (such as the Maya reference, and the ideas of corruption and environmental denudation), but there are more than meets the eye for the average movie viewer. Mikhail Red is a director to look forward to and Birdshot is one of the best Filipino movies in this modern age of filmmaking, a masterpiece in its own right.

JR's Movie Reviews - THE KISSING BOOTH

No comments:

The Kissing Booth
THE KISSING BOOTH
Year of Release: 2018, Netflix

JR's Rating:  (3.0 out of 10, Terrible)

"Sprucing Something Out of a Very Terrible Kiss"

The actors may look cute (and hot) but the story is just the same old cheap flick you may watch if you're blatantly bored or just into romantic comedies. The Kissing Booth is a terrible idea for its love story that is rushed and for its actors that are weak and bad at acting. There are better romantic flicks to look forward to on Netflix but this isn't one.

The Kissing Booth is just one of those ideas by best friends Elle and Lee to have on their school carnival as fund-raising for their organization. Elle is forced to have Lee's brother, Noah, be a part of it as demand was really there for him. Though failed to have him on it, Elle eventually kisses Noah at The Kissing Booth eventually starting a love story between them that is against the will of Lee as both Lee and Elle had always that rule which forbade Elle to fall in love with Lee's brother. What follows is a chaotic turn of events between Lee, Elle and Noah.

Netflix may have those hits but this definitely is a miss. Though Jacob Elordi and Joey King are amazing in the most physical sense, their acting is just not good and the chemistry between them is weak. I was even looking forward for more screen time from the antagonistic "bitches" as they could have made the movie more interesting. The story isn't a saving grace either. Causing chaos out of something so shallow is just a terrible idea. Having to fall in love with just one kiss and fight over rules set from childhood may be realistic but it doesn't seem to really work out if you would create a sensible movie. Nah, I won't recommend this film just because it has those hot stars you see online.

"A Love Story Written For You"

You may have fallen in love with a few people in your love, hoping for sweet memories to share with one another yet just dream about. One day you decide to write a letter to each one, imaginatively creating a story or an ode but be kept by you as it all just happens to be but a fairy tale not destined to happen. However, what if it did happen, your personal letter might be the key for you to earn that love story you had been praying and dying for all life. Enter the story of Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky...

Lara Jean is not your typical girl-next-door. With those nerdy cute style, she admired 5 different guys who, at the course of her life, entered hers in one way or another. She writes an intimate letter for each one yet not to be sent to them but be kept by her to cherish those feelings of excitement she had when she had a crush on them. What happens is a love story between her and one of those secret crushes she wrote a letter to, Peter. A story that seems to be fake at start but real in the end.

To All The Boys I've Loved Before may not be the most amazing romantic comedy to see on Netflix but it manages to be a recommended one if you want to laugh, be sad and also fall in love. It's a movie where you hope that it can happen in real life because despite how fairy tale it is, you know it can and may happen. The portrayal of Noah Centineo as Peter might have earned him a massive fanbase just recently but let's not forget how awesome Lana Condor was too; she is meant to play a character desired by the book to be awkward yet cute and also relatable. The story is also unique as it explores the reverse concept of what letters are meant to be, to be sent, yet also managing to spruce a creative love story from it. Pop culture references are there and also lines that are meant to feast your heart and mind. Because of this movie, you might just want to create that letter to the one you like too, hoping for a love story the same as Lara Jean.

"Doing The Unthinkable"

This is definitely a movie that is worth a watch for how it relates to the traditional Filipino provincial lifestyle. A movie which also never fail to expose the poor social and political conditions of our country. Probably my shot at the best Filipino film this year, Signal Rock will leave you with awe upon leaving the cinema inspired that you too can face life's biggest challenges.

Intoy lives in an island where cellular signal is only reached by going to an elevated area formed from rocks. His impoverished family is heavily dependent from his sister married to a foreign national. With Intoy's good looks and charm, he manages to be the go to guy of everyone in their community for every situation they face. One day, Intoy receives a call from his sister needing help against losing custody of her daughter from a very abusive husband. Intoy, by all means, does the unimaginable.

Set in the most beautiful island of Samar, Signal Rock is a melting pot of emotions ready to burst to its audience. Christian Bables is definitely it's highest point well playing the main, Intoy. Everything in the movie is pristine including every side moment for the supporting characters who each have their own personal agenda with Intoy, never losing continuity to the main storyline. These specific moments are an opportunity to identify problems that exist then and now on every barrio of our country. It never loses focuses on the issues of corruption, political dynasty, forced interracial marriage, tsismis culture and the wrong notion of "utang na loob". Every character and every scene has it's own symbolism which is worth a discussion with a friend you may have watched the movie with. Besides my mind, the movie also touched my heart. I can't help but feel down with such a sad ending to a very well fought win. If there's one thing this movie taught me good, it's that anyone can do the unimaginable in the most creative means.

The Day After Valentine's
THE DAY AFTER VALENTINE'S
Year of Release: 2018

JR's Rating:  (4.8 out of 10, Not Good)

"A Horrific Valentines Date"

The Day After Valentines' is a massacre to my high set of expectations due to its awkward acting, forced emotions and bad story. Horrific indeed, that it will never match the grandeur of 2017's Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino entry, 100 Tula Para Kay Stella.

The Day After Valentines' tackles the crazy (fucked) up lives of both Lani and Kai. Both of which are struggling with their own personal demons. Kai having to face the reality of being ignored by his ex-girlfriend and also a failed catching up with his family in Hawaii while Lani having to cope with both his childhood horror and a failed attempt at love. Both supposedly (or possibly) are to fall in love with one another until they're faced with the reality that they may not be meant for each other.

My expectations are really high on this one since the movie set before by Bela and JC was for me a masterpiece in its own right (I gave 100 Tula Para Kay Stella a 10/10). I felt the movie was rushed that the sympathy I should be having for the characters was not really there. It's a shame that even the good intentions of using baybayin in the film was not a saving grace. Not even the beautiful landscape that is Hawaii and it's amazing culture would save this film. Also, shaky cam may be a style some films use to give some sense of feel (or thrill) but this film is an example where it doesn't really work. I definitely don't recommend a film that would make (and even a few of the audience) say, "yun na yun?".

"A More Traditional Sense of Love"

Love is kind but love is most definitely patient. Ang Babaeng Allergic sa Wifi is definitely one of the better romantic comedies this millenial generation would relate too. Much with the technology existing in this world, expression of love evolved with it through social media exposure and publicity.

Norma is suffering from a rare disorder of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity, a disorder which causes allergic reaction upon exposure to wifi (or any form of cellular signal). With Norma forced to live in a "wifi-absent" provincial set-up with her lola still living with the past, her boyfriend, Leo, struggles to balance time towards visiting her and towards her basketball lifestyle. Aries, Leo's brother, on the contrary, gives all the possible time he has with Norma to make her feel loved and happy.

While science is still indifferent with the existence of such disorder, the movie makes good use of the idea what if it did exist. In what is probably the best acting performance by Sue Ramirez and Jameson Blake in a movie, Ang Babaeng Allergic sa Wifi is definitely worth giving all the praise as it exceeded expectations by being relatable and also thought-provoking in a much online generation we are in. As much as I expected a happy ever after ending in what seems to be an exciting kilig story for both Norma and Aries, I can't help myself feel torn and heartbroken by such a devastating plot twist that caught me off guard.

JR's Short Film Reviews - BAO

No comments:

Bao

BAO
"The Closest Pixar Came To Home"

Bao is a short film shown right before the movie Incredibles 2.

A mother's love for her children is never a joke. Carrying a child in her womb for a couple of months, add up the cooking skills she equipped herself and the hardwork she gave in raising him or her up are just a few manifestations of a mother's greatest and most sacrificial love for someone other than herself. If you're living in a typical Filipino family whose sense of closeness and protectiveness is unjustified vocally but consciously understandable, then you're in such a treat after watching this short film. Our mothers have been so sensitive and delicate to us on our being in shape and perfection, a beauty to her eyes. A mother's giving up to her child as he or she starts to have a world of his or her own is the hardest she can endure (harder than giving birth probably) because of the uncomputable amount of patience and understanding she had to give other than that painful labor she had to go through. Reality is separation is just part of life's complete cycle. And a mother, despite the pain, will just have to support her child on her dreams and success in life. Bao exemplifies just that by using a dumpling, a dumpling created with utmost care and made to endure the harshest of conditions but eventually as time pass by, that same dumpling will have to go away from the maker to someone who it's meant for (probably to be eaten). Going to the other end of the spectrum, being raised up to existence by our very own mother's, regardless of culture or beliefs, a children's sense of giving back through finances but better in presence may be voluntary but the most meaningful way of giving thanks and showing appreciation for every thing she has done. Every minute, hour or day we get to talk or bond with our mothers (or parents) is just priceless and can never be equated with anything in this world; as a mother's world is definitely her children. Bao made me value my mother again despite my rebellious nature to her overprotectiveness. This has been the closest Pixar came to my home, my family.

If I were to score this short film, I'll give it a  (9.8/10), Excellent.

JR's Movie Reviews - HEREDITARY

Hereditary
HEREDITARY
Year of Release: 2018
Date Watched: 28 June 2018 (at SM Cinemas - Sta. Mesa)
JR's Rating:  (9.9 out of 10, Excellent)
"Disturbing and Damn Scary Indeed"

⭐️ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ⭐️

POSITIVES
➕ Charlie (and Her Decapitation)
➕ Gruesome Demonic Ending
➕ The Miniatures
➕ Dinner Table Monologue
➕ Toni Collette as Annie
➕ Too Much Scary Twists
NEGATIVES
none

Not all horror films bank on jumpscares to keep you out of sleep. Hereditary scares the crap out of you by telling a tale so horrific that it doesn't need any ghost or monster appearance to be that damn terrifying. Hereditary explores the psychological transition of a family after having to deal with the death of a grandmother then eventually their one and only daughter. Unbeknown to the family, their grandma had already made a pack with the devil Paimon to have him a male host to possess which then happens to be their one and only son, Peter. Many films before like Rosemary's Baby, Get Out, and The Silence of the Lambs never made use of any ghost but rather told a psychologically scarring story that remains scary from the time you watch the movie up to this very day you are conscious and breathing. Hereditary just does that and doesn't holdback on its distinction as the scariest movie of the year (before Suspiria and Halloween). Each and every intricate scene has that spooky and disturbing vibe. From the tree house where Charlie sleeps to the miniatures made by Annie, I can't help but feel uneasy with what it is to unfold at the movie's ending. The movie has an amazing set of actors but the one who played Annie, Toni Collette, was definitely splendid and deserving of an ovation. Her dinner table monologue is one of the many that exemplified my amazement with her. Charlie's decapitation was gruesome but you have to finish the entire movie to see an ending that is so disturbing you wouldn't want to see it again but remarkable you'll have to include it as one of the best endings in horror. I have to say this film is one of the best and scariest horror films of this modern age.

INCREDIBLES 2
Year of Release: 2018
Date Watched: 17 June 2018 (at SM Cinemas - Manila)
JR's Rating:  (9.7 out of 10, Excellent)
"Done Properly, Parenting Is A Heroic Act"

POSITIVES
➕ Jack-Jack
➕ Continuity with First Movie
➕ Women Empowerment
➕ Memorable Comedic Scenes
➕ Edna Mode Returns
➕ Jack-Jack and Squirrel Scene
➕ Improved Visuals from the First
NEGATIVES
➖Some Disorienting Scenes

Incredibles 2 is definitely a fitting sequel to the superhero family we loved way back 2004. Prepare to be amazed by how Pixar's animation skills have improved throughout their presence in the industry. Continuing from the story of the first movie, the Parr family tries their best to bring back heroes to the scene after getting a soft ban by their government due to a failed attempt to defeat the Underminer and causing destruction to the city along the way. Elastigirl gets herself involved with a fanatic of superheroes to show the public the need for supers to help the world. How incredible it was that this film banked on Elastigirl after the first movie banked on Mr. Incredible's power. It was only this time I get to appreciate Elastigirl as much of the movie's exposure is on her. Mr. Incredible though isn't suppressed as numerous comedic scenes erupt from his father duties to his family. By the way, who wouldn't forget Jack-Jack's numerous powers seen in his battle against a squirrel and his babysit with Edna Mode. That baby is definitely the most powerful out of everyone. I was hoping though that Dash and Violet get much exposure if a sequel is on the mix. While there are some disorienting scenes involving the Screenslaver, all was essential towards the depiction of the villain. The Incredibles 2 shows how far Pixar has gone after years of film-making. We'll heres to hoping more films with the Incredibles.

JR's Movie Reviews - JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM
Year of Release: 2018
Date Watched: 19 June 2018 (at SM Cinemas - North Edsa)
JR's Rating:  (8.9 out of 10, Satisfactory)
"Compassion for our Dinosaur Friends"

POSITIVES
➕ Promotion of Animal Conservation
➕ Brachiosaurus Death Scene
➕ Mosasaurus Introduction Scene
➕ "Blue" Velociraptor
➕ Stygimoloch
➕ The Ethics of Dinosaur Resurrection
NEGATIVES

I can't help but say that of all the Jurassic Park + World movies this one amazed me the most by just how fun and thrilling the whole adventure was. While the movie banks on the idea of dinosaurs coexisting with humans, the symbolic use of dinosaurs to promote a chance at protecting vulnerable and endangered animals is what really hit me the most. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom brings an end to the park that we originally saw in its movie predecessor as a volcano is expected to erupt erasing each and every cloned dinosaur from existence. Owen and Claire goes back to the island for one goal, to help save the dinosaurs from meeting their demise as humans were the ones who brought them back in the first place. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom brings back the Mosasaurus in a very powerful introduction and the Velociraptor "Blue" rekindling the bond it had with its trainer. The movie also brings the dangerous clone of the Indominus Rex and Velociraptor, the Indoraptor, into the mix creating havoc to most of the film's end. One scene that I have to mention is the one involving the Brachiosaurus being left to die on the island shedding me a few tears along the movie. Behind those amazing scenes and effects is an important message to its viewers - the idea of animal preservation especially to those animals who might already cease their existence. While cloning back extinct animals is almost in the helm of humans, the effort to protect remaining endangered ones is still the utmost concern. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a propaganda, one involving conservation symbolically portrayed through dinosaurs.

"Love Is Love"

⭐️ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ⭐️

POSITIVES
➕ Sweet and Gentle Bank
➕ Aggressive and Unaccepting Golf
➕ From Step Brothers to Lovers
➕ Very Tragic Ending
➕ Realistic View of Same Love Struggles
➕ Prepare to Cry
NEGATIVES
none

No other romantic film made me cry more than this film right here. I had watched this film numerous times and it's just lately I got to watch it again. Ultimately, for pride month, allow me to make my review. My Bromance isn't your typical love story as it explores the transgression of emotions between two contrasting step brothers, Golf who is aggressive and unaccepting towards his brother and Bank who is gentle and sweet craving for the acceptance of his brother. While Golf eventually makes amend and accepts Bank, their "love" towards another takes a toll on their family and towards their future. You'll definitely have all that feels and compassion towards the main characters in this film, a glimpse of the true real-to-life struggles of couples resemblance of Bank and Golf. The movie banked on an amazing set of actors who gave life to such a well-written story that is both romantic and tragic. Every scene and dialogue involving both Bank and Golf together are worth the watch. The monologues and situations by them and their friends are all eye-openers towards issues that are in need of an open mind and understanding. It's amazing that Thai films open new ground for the acceptance of same love and this one is probably the best that have spruced out from their medium.

"The Complicated Reality of Coming Out"

⭐️ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ⭐️

POSITIVES
➕ Nick Robinson
➕ Simon's Friends
➕ The Ferris Wheel Ending
➕ Movie Soundtrack
➕ Tear-Jerking Scenes involving Simon
➕ Quotable Lines on Coming Out
NEGATIVES
none

Love, Simon expedites the sometimes brutal yet beautiful situations gay people have to go through with each and every day of their life. The movie is very timely as it exposes the continued challenge of acceptance despite a reforming contemporary society. Simon is your average teenager attending school and consistently hanging out with friends and family. When a schoolmate anonymously posts confessions of his sexuality online, Simon tries to communicate with him eventually forming an attachment towards the individual. Problem ensues when a schoolmate sees Simon's e-mail by accident and attempts to expose his secret if he doesn't help him. The movie is cute and surely any one from this generation would easily fall in love with. The movie means alot to me as I easily related myself in the most numerous of ways. Wonderfully acted by Nick Robinson, Simon's portrayal is on track with what it really is like to be your typical closeted teenage boy. Simon's group of friends are so special in the run of this film as each imposes a unique vibe for the main character to work with. I can't help myself but feel teary and eventually cry for Simon when he has to experience the most brutal of ridicule in school plus that the harsh waiting for "Blue" to reveal himself after losing touch of him. The moods I experienced with the movie are all the more motivated by its diverse soundtrack that are upbeat. I easily fell in love with this film. It definitely earns that special place in my heart.

"Thanos Wins and Deserves A Thunderous Applause"

POSITIVES
➕ Thanos
➕ Heartbreaking Ending
➕ Battle in Wakanda
➕ Thor and His Stormbreaker
➕ Soul Stone in Vormir
➕ Punchlines that Work
➕ The Infinity Gauntlet
➕ Too Many Surprises
NEGATIVES
➖CGI Mishaps
➖Some Unanswered Details

It has been 10 years in the making and Marvel did not disappoint on bringing the journey of Thanos towards collecting all the Infinity Stones. Yes, the Infinity Stones including the Soul Stone has finally been uncovered in Avengers: Infinity War. While the Infinity War has seemingly concluded, the movie demands us to see the Avengers movie slated next year to give fruition on what transpired to those heroes that got lost in the end. It's true that a lot of heroes (and a popular villain) get to die during the war but I just can't help but root for Thanos who was truly the most amazing asset. Being both vengeful and emotional towards his daughter Gamora, Thanos makes the best recipe for a villain in a superhero movie. He is indeed a titan that is just so powerful and somewhat impossible to beat. The movie is action-packed, most especially the battle done at Wakanda, and exciting with the too many surprises, like Cap's appearance, that the audience can't just prevent to roar with applause but the movie never fails to punch you with tears at some of the most emotional scenes in superhero history like the sacrifice of Gamora at Vormir and the goodbye of Spider-Man to Iron Man. One notable scene I got to mention is Thor's mighty stormbreaker creation, reveal and use confirming my statement from my review of Thor: Ragnarok that indeed he is the strongest Avenger after all. There are some CGI mishaps in this film like Bruce Banner awkwardly placed at the large Iron Man suit and inconsistencies of the appearance with Thanos but my criticism would have to be some missing key plotholes like "Who is Thanos?", "How did his want to collect the Infinity Stones start?" and most importantly, "How did Thanos get the Power Stone and the Reality Stone?" (we just get to see it already at his gauntlet). All-in-all, the movie done great with the story and acting by an ensemble cast complemented by the script with effective punchlines that really goes well with the flow of the movie. The movie is worth the hype but much anticipation is on the next movie due to how the movie ended and I do hope that it's the best culmination of all the Marvel movies been made thus far. Marvel fans definitely have to watch this before watching the fourth Avengers film.

"They Lived Happily Ever After..."

⭐️ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ⭐️

POSITIVES
➕ The Amphibian
➕ Elisa
➕ The Sex Between Woman and Fish
➕ Use of Minority Characters
➕ 1962 Baltimore Setting
➕ The Highly Aesthetic Ending
➕ Aesthetics and Style by del Torro
➕ Use of Classic Music, TV and Film
NEGATIVES
none

Astounding from start to finish, The Shape of Water explores a unique fairy tale / love story masterfully concepted by Guillermo del Torro on film. The Shape of Water never failed in it's distinction as the Best Picture in the 2018 Academy Awards. Upon the government holding captive a creature that is worshipped as a god in South America, Elisa, a mute orphan who works as a janitress in the military facility, becomes fascinated with the captive being, developing a connection with it unlike no other. Elisa soon is challenged to escape the creature from the facility in order to save it from possible experimentation and thereby death from it's captors. The beauty of the film relies heavily on its unique story and its two main characters. The creature in this film is just a masterwork, a beauty in what is perceived to be as a beast by the antagonists. I can't help but feel awe when the creature lights itself and even show its healing capabilities. The story is so unique, an ode indeed to the many fairy tales that we come to see as kids. Take caution though as some sensitive scenes are in this film but are definitely necessary. The movie almost had a tragic ending but fairy tales indeed should always have hope and a happy ever after ending. It's one of the most aesthetic endings I have seen in film. One notable thing about this movie also are its use of minorites to expose a propaganda on the harrased and unfair treatment of them within the society. It's what I think the most obvious moral of this film that Del Torro wants to convey. Del Torro's story complemented by his direction and aesthetics is just wonderful. The Shape of Water is a future classic deserving a chance to be seen by everyone and for generations and generations to come.
