JR Late Night Blogs: Music Videos of the Year 2015

JR's Music Videos of the Year - 2015
After more than a year of blog hiatus, JR returns with his annual list of the music and music videos that defined the entire year. Unlike JR's Movies of the Year list that take into account the box office, reviews and social media attention of the films, JR only takes into account the aesthetics, uniqueness, innovation, and coolness of the music and its corresponding music video in his music videos of the year list (which makes YouTube views, Billboard Hot 100 rankings, and social media attention not even a criteria on JR's ranking in this list). JR puts into account, however, the amount of plays the music had in his iTunes account. It purely is based on JR's personal taste and preference. In order to qualify as a 2015 music or music video, the video should have been uploaded in YouTube within the time frame 01 December 2014 to 30 November 2015 or if it has been released outside the time frame, the music incorporated in the music video should have earned a spot in the year-end Billboard Hot 100 charts for 2015. "How Deep Is Your Love" by Calvin Harris easily nags the top spot for its well-crafted and impressive music video. Both the music and video really complemented each other in a very beautiful and interesting manner. It is JR's personal favorite music and music video for the year, even having the most plays in JR's iTunes account with 335 plays for the entire year according to JR's iTunes play count. Justin Bieber earned the most spots in this year's list with 3 entries - "What Do You Mean" at #3, "Sorry" at #5, and "Where Are Ü Now" at #7 - truly making this year, the year of Justin Bieber, the year that people learned to like his music. EDM (Electronic Dance Music) dominated the list with 4 different artists each having an individual entry, Calvin Harris, Jack Ü (composed of Diplo and Skrillex), Zedd and Avicii. Unfortunately, Drake, Ariana Grande, and Brandon Beal all did not even made a rank in this year's list as all artists listed in this years' list really outdid them for their songs and music video. Even Adele's "Hello" did not make it in this year's list. It was really a difficult process to choose among JR's short list of 17 music videos on who would be included in the top 10. This year no doubt belongs to Justin Bieber but we start with Calvin Harris, JR now unveils 2015 Music Videos of the Year list.

Summary of the List:

JR's MUSIC VIDEOS OF THE YEAR - 2015 METHODOLOGY:
  1. For a music and its corresponding music video to qualify in the list, it must have been entirely listened and watched by JR from start to finish and is deemed by him as aesthetically beautiful, unique amongst all videos released within the year, very innovative in terms of its presentation of music video, and it has that cool factor upon watching and listening to it.
  2. In order to qualify as a 2015 music video, the music videos in the list must have been released worldwide on YouTube between 01 December 2014 to 30 November 2015 and must be available in the Philippines for viewing. No local entries, however, are qualified.
  3. In cases, however, of music videos released outside the time frame specified, the music included in the music video must be listed in the year-end Billboard Hot 100 of the corresponding year of the list to be qualified as a 2015 music (despite it not being a 2015 music video).
  4. An artist can have a maximum of two entries within a year excluding, however, entries that may feature them but have another artist as its distinguished artist.
  5. All YouTube views in the list were as of end of the year - 01 January 2016. All numbers have been rounded to the nearest thousands.

"I want you to breathe me, Let me be your air
Let me roam your body freely, No inhibition, no fear"
"How Deep Is Your Love" by Calvin Harris & Disciples makes it in this year's top spot for having the catchiest tune amongst all songs in the list and coolest video amongst all music videos in the list. Shot in various locations around California, the music video is an amazing example of a modern-day music video experience with the clubs and lights reflective of electronic dance music (or EDM). The video is full of beautiful and gorgeous women but it was Gigi Hadid, the model who led us to such scenic locations in the video, that will forever be remembered and cherished in this music video. It is an amazing experience (although not a sexual one) that we will cherish and reminisce as the year 2015 ends. The lyrics despite repetitive is accompanied by an innovative and catchy tune all throughout. This is the second time that Calvin Harris made a song that makes it in the lists' top spot after he was featured with Rihanna in "We Found Love" last 2011 when then it was a battle against 25 other music videos contending for the top spot (now, its only 15). This time, Calvin Harris makes it in the list as the main artist not the featured one. After finding love, its now the search on how really deep is that love. Calvin Harris proves that his music are worth listening to and that his music videos are worth watching to. The experience of listening to the music itself is already an orgasmic one.

"Day drunk into the night, Wanna keep you here
Cause you dry my tears, Yeah, summer lovin' and fights
How it is for us, And it's all because..."
"Talking Body" by Tove Lo, just like the song mentioned prior in this list, is already an orgasmic experience just by its music alone. The music though, upon continuous listening and understanding, is just basically about love and sex, but most of all, sex (as it is what the body speaks as per the songs lyrics). The music video accompanying this song appears to be made in one single-shot which makes it a unique entry in this year's list. We are immersed to the sex club lifestyle with almost naked women accompanying almost every scene in the video which is in a way an effective placement in the music video of the song. It all comes in full circle when all the self-pleasuring ends in a very absurd and definitive way reflective of how we enjoy the "you only live once" concept and end being damned for good. The single-shot creativity of this video easily almost makes the video as the winner in this year's list as it is very much effective and creative.

"Deny this emptiness, This hole that I'm inside
These tears, They tell their own story"
"Lay Me Down" by Sam Smith has probably the most meaningful lyrics amongst all entries in this year's list. It's basically about the longing for a lost loved one reminiscing all the different memories accompanying the person's presence when he or she was still present (or living, if the person died). The emotions of the song are so strong that it easily catches the heart of its listener eventually ending in a sad and tearjerking experience. That tear-inducing moment though is further enhanced with its accompanying music video. With its in media res style, we first see the death of the artist's loved special someone, then we flashback to the couple's wedding very well supported by their friends and family despite it being of same sex. The video ends with the artist praying indicating what happens after the funeral of the artist's partner. That last scene for me sums up what the music is all about. The last time we encountered such and was so very effective in catching our emotions was in the first five minutes of Disney Pixar's "Up". In this music video though we see a same-sex couple, it may be a controversial move for Sam Smith but it's so damn effective that you will feel with the people involved and not mind anymore of the sexual identity of the two. Besides, we love for what's inside and not for what is outside. It's a simple statement but so very strong and so very needed in a very sexual and superficial society. "Lay Me Down" is unlike any song in the list, as it is emotionally driven and tear inducing and it purposely is crafted as such.

"You’re so indecisive of what I’m saying
Trying to catch the beat, make up your heart.
Don't know if you're happy, or complaining.
Don’t want for us to end where do I start"
"What Do You Mean?" by Justin Bieber is the first of the three times we will see Justin Bieber in this year's list. Justin Bieber rocked this year with so meaningful and emotionally driven songs such being "Love Yourself", "Sorry" and "I'll Show You". His most definitive of the year will definitely be "What Do You Mean?" as it is the only one that peaks at #1 in Billboard's Hot 100 and as it is his most viewed music video for the year. (In fact, Justin Bieber's "What Do You Mean" is the most played song in JR's iTunes gallery with 316 plays.) Justin Bieber is notorious for easily earning millions of views on YouTube with his "Baby" music video already at the 1.2 billion views mark. This one is an awesome addition to those most viewed videos of his as it very well deserves the views that it will reserve as we see a new, more mature Justin Bieber. In the music video for "What Do You Mean?", we are treated with an action experience that is very well-played and unique. We finally learn to love Justin Bieber with well-crafted songs like this one in this year's list.

"I'll take every single piece of the blame if you want me to
But you know that there is no innocent one in this game for two
I'll go, I'll go and then you go, you go out and spill the truth"
"Sorry" by Justin Bieber is the second of the three times we will see Justin Bieber in this year's list. I personally love this song, as it is catchy (sometimes I sing and dance along the tune) and so meaningful and well-crafted (count the times I mentioned the two words in this year's list as it is very repetitive but very definitive of the entries in this list). The music video is very simple as it just dances to the tune of Justin Bieber's song. I may have selected Justin Bieber's music video for "Love Yourself" but I sticked with this one as the music and music video are a more personal favorite than the prior. We see women in this music video empowered to dance along in Justin Bieber's song. This video is part of a series of Purpose: The Movement music videos that Justin Bieber released in the past year. It's the first time actually that we don't see Justin Bieber in a music video for a major single release of him. It's so unique for JB to take this opportunity for another group of people to create the music video for him and very well define it for him. Justin Bieber really earned a huge comeback in this year with already two songs that were so impactful and so memorable.

"I don't wanna be needing your love
I just wanna be deep in your love
And it's killing me when you're away"
"Sugar" by Maroon 5 is the most viewed music video in this year's list and its' so very unfair to even not list it in JR's definitive music videos of the year list. The music video has a unique concept anyways so it very well deserves a place in this year's list. We tape and set-up hidden cameras in various wedding events around California and we bring in Maroon 5 in the set and sing their brand new single, what would you do? In this music video, we see different sets of newly-wed couples invaded in what seems to be a very well planned invasion by Maroon 5 in coordination with those wedding planners of the different weddings. The song in itself is already catchy and by the time the music video was released, the more I loved it. I may not understand the relationship of the song and its accompanying music video but it's so damn innovative and it's even hard to miss this out in this year's list.

"I gave you the key when the door wasn't open, just admit it
See I gave you faith turned your doubt in to hoping, can't deny it
Now I'm all alone and my joys turned to moping "
"Where Are Ü Now" by Jack Ü ft. Justin Bieber is the last entry of Justin Bieber in this year's list. "Where Are Ü Now" is the first of a series of songs that Justin Bieber would release in the duration of the past year. In actuality, the music video accompanying the song is the very reason that this even made it in this year's list and it would be so unfair for Jack Ü if I would not have placed their music video in my selection of the music videos of the year as it is an art and a masterpiece in itself. It may not be a memorable experience for those living with epilepsy and seizures but its random and eclectic colorful visuals and images are so damn beautiful and creative. I imagined how hard it is to create such music video with different images being presented in even a split of a split second. Try to look out for the penis that impales Justin Bieber at the 2:03 mark of the video. But regardless, try to check every scene of the music video. You might as well see different interesting imagery that will taint your minds forever.

"I see what you're wearing, there's nothing beneath it
Forgive me for staring, forgive me for breathing
We might not know why, we might not know how
But baby, tonight, we're beautiful now"
"Beautiful Now" by Zedd ft. Jon Bellion is so damn beautiful earning JR's 8th spot in his music videos of the year list. In all of the songs in this year's list, this song is my second most favorite amongst all listed (behind "How Deep Is Your Love" by Calvin Harris & Disciples, of course). I may have placed "I Want You To Know" in this year's list but this got the upper hand because it has a better music video among the two. As per my research about the video's concept, we see five different sets of people with different stories intertwined in the music video. First, we see a girl who apparently drowned her lesbian partner in a pool. Second, we see an elderly man journeying away from his home. Third, we see a man whose home is invaded by armed robbers who intends to kill the man's father. Fourth, we see Zedd stealing from a liquor store and holding a knife against the store's owner upon catching him. Fifth, we see a woman intending to commit suicide in a railroad. Upon further watching the video, we then see those happy experiences of these five people flashback reflecting what should soon be the conclusion of their individual stories. We see the first girl reflecting what she had done on her partner and the gravity of her mistake. We see the elderly man attempting to climb the mountain but loses grip before reaching the mountain's summit. We see the man who was initially scared to confront the armed robbers finally confronting them to save his father. We see Zedd's character reflect on those events that led to him being a thief at present. We see the suicidal woman being saved from her attempted suicide after being missed by the train. The concept of "Beautiful Now" is encaptured by each different individual beautifully. Their stories very well define "Beautiful Now."

He took me in his arms, I heard him say, 'When you get older
Your wild heart will live for younger days
Think of me if ever you're afraid.'"
"The Nights" by Avicii makes us want to live our lives to the fullest. The concept of the song and music video is pretty much simple, we value each and every night we live in our lives as one day we might leave this world behind. Those nights which were well lived are the nights we will remember. Did I just rewrote the lyrics, oh well. The father figure is very well defined in the song's lyrics being the central entity to whom the song is referring. It counts to have the advices of our father valued. Avicii's father may have taught him well that's why Avicii is a very influential artist now.

"All my life, You stood by me, when no one else was ever behind me
All these lights, They can't blind me
With your love, nobody can drag me down"
"Drag Me Down" by One Direction is the most perfect swan song for the boy band of the decade. This song was their first single after Zayn Malik's departure from the group this recent year. The loss of its one member was not a big loss for the group though as they still made a wonderful song for the past year. The music video accompanying this song is reflective of the music videos done by boy bands in the past just like Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. What perfect way to end the list with this song that the boy band created before taking a much needed break from the public to rest and to fulfill their individual dreams and careers.
