"Ecstatic, Born To Be A Performer"

Note: In doing this review, I neglected the historical accuracy of the events occuring on the film. So everything in this movie was solely judged on the movie's story, production set, direction and acting. Everything was treated as if it were a work of art with liberty in story-making.

It was too late I have to do this review as I had my exams way back November but lo and behold I had it made just in time before the Oscars. I had this film to blame for earworming (if such a word exist) to "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Another One Bites The Dust", "I Want To Break Free", and "Don't Stop Me Now" a few days before my board exams (and I thank Queen for helping me pass, by the way). Bohemian Rhapsody, both the film and the titular song, made me fell in love with Queen, Freddie Mercury and their most certainly immortal music. Rami Malek's performance as Freddie Mercury is one for the books; like Freddie, he's ecstatic and born to be a performer in this movie. I'm betting on him for the Best Actor nod for the Oscars. Each performance in this movie are to die for but due credit is to be made for the LiveAID performance which the crew done it's best to replicate even in it's tiniest detail. I felt teary eyed watching the entire scene most especially that events preceeding this already imposed an impending death to Freddie (in reality, however, it was after LiveAID when Freddie was diagnosed with HIV and AIDS). Bohemian Rhapsody remains one of the best musicals in recent memory. It's a treat to a generation who never got to see and hear Freddie Mercury's music. It was sad that his life was a shortlived one but admiration is to be placed for, despite his seemingly legendary status, he is all but a human being who craves for love and family.

🚩🚩🚩SPOILERS AHEAD 🚩🚩🚩

Here are some important points I had on watching "Bohemian Rhapsody":

✅ Freddie Mercury
- His life was really one for film and I think Bohemian Rhapsody (the movie) gave it due justice. Imagine the most colorful life from one of the greatest musicians of all time interpreted on screen, that's just too large to handle. Seeing him very much alive in the film Bohemian Rhapsody was an experience I would definitely recommend for both movie and music fans. But I have to emphasize the need for fact checking after the film as some were made for dramatic effect.

✅ Rami Malek
- Rami Malek's interpretation of Freddie Mercury's persona is all ecstatic. He interpreted Freddie as close to his persona as possible. Wouldn't have been for Rami's performance, we wouldn't have the full Freddie Mercury experience. I wouldn't doubt and even pout if he wins his first Best Actor in the Academy Awards.

✅ Ecstatic Introduction
- Stepping at the Wembley's stage, the movie's introduction sets the mood for what it has in store for the audience. It's anything but rock and music. We are set for something that is exciting and dynamic. The scene would eventually be repeated later on just in time for LiveAID.

✅ "Bohemian Rhapsody"
- The music can be considered in itself a masterpiece incorporating multiple genres such as Opera, Rock and even Acapella. Every time it's played, it brings an experience full of emotion and euphoria. There's no song like it. How it was conceptualized, rejected, lambasted and then eventually praised is to look out for in its film. Besides, the film was named as Bohemian Rhapsody.

✅ "We Will Rock You"
- Brian May introduced us this song where we, as its listeners, are enjoined to beat. We can't help but do the same while his character in this film was introducing it to Freddie, Roger and John. It's an iconic song with an iconic tune.

✅ "Another One Bites The Dust"
- If there's anything to praise about Queen is their willingness to risk and try different forms, attacks and methods on music. Approaching the disco era of music, Queen introduced us to this song. In the film, it was artistically presented as the spark to Freddie's spiral to promiscuity. The scenes were so vividly done.

✅ Bonus "Don't Stop Me Now"
- Don't just go out when the credits roll as you'll be treated with an encore of Freddie, the real Freddie Mercury, performing the song "Don't Stop Me Now". I felt shivers while watching the scene. It made me wonder what if Freddie was still alive.

✅ Freddie's Coming Out
- After showing his wife a clip of an entire audience singing "Love of My Life", Freddie would come out as bisexual to her. This scene is pivotal throughout the film because life before and after this was different. There were signs before this but the partying, promiscuity and lavish lifestyle embezzled after. Freddie's coming out was a two-sided experience, you'll feel both for Freddie and his ex-girlfriend, Mary. Freddie was struggling with his sexuality while Mary has to suffer it's consequences. It would also be depressing later on when both go on their separate ways.

✅ LiveAID
- The experience of watching Queen performing on LiveAID was the most spine-tingling, shiver-inducing and tear-jerking I have been in music. I have never been to any concert of a major league singer or band but the experience of watching LiveAID made me feel like I'm on one. It was really the ending deserving in Bohemian Rhapsody.

✅ Jim Hutton
- Freddie's life ended on a satisfying note when he and Jim Hutton decide to become partners until his eventual death in 1991. While his appearance was brief, he was instrumental towards Freddie's change. I find their initial meeting as cute but their eventual meeting in the end as more heartwarming. While Freddie's hair and beard was designed after Paul, it would be all for Jim.

With 10 amazing reasons to watch and no reason not to watch,
"Bohemian Rhapsody" is a 9.7/10 for me.
