"The Duality of the Human Experience"

Jordan Peele may have earned a name alongside Hitchcock, Spielberg and Kubrick for crafting intense yet symbolic horror movies deserving of audience and acclaim. “Get Out” is one of my favorite horror movies and “Us” definitely I anticipated by the time it was announced. It didn’t fail expectations and delivered superbly. It’s definitely horror, no other genre attached. We are brought to a sun-soaked beachfront of California where Adelaide gets to see a duplicate of herself when she was still a child. Years later, her family faces their exact replications in an uprising to conquer the United States. The tethers, a symbolism of human duality between good and evil, are scary and their every move is creepy enough to create a new monster in movies. It took real effort to portray characters of differing nature, one bothersome the other your typical human. Stand out would definitely be Lupita Nyong’o’s anxious Adelaide and well-trained Red. That scene where they chase each other in the end was for me the creepiest. Else, the music at the beginning and a disturbing version of “I Got 5 On It” gave me the goosebumps when no horror was yet on the onset of happening. As a horror movie fan, I definitely had fun checking out the many references, as well, in this film as what is expected of Jordan Peele. Untether yourself from reality with this new horror masterpiece.

🚩🚩🚩SPOILERS AHEAD 🚩🚩🚩

Here are some important points I had on watching "Us":

✅ Jordan Peele
Jordan Peele is a man of his own brand. He’s one of the best directors to spruce in this modern era of filmmaking. He placed horror movies at the forefront of critical acclaim and awards. He proved he’s not a one-shot wonder with “Get Out” creating a new nightmare with unique concept and amazing direction. The opening “A Jordan Peele Film” is enough reason to watch “Us”.

✅ Lupita Nyong'o
Helming a “Best Supporting Actress” from the Academy Awards, Lupita Nyong’o’s entrance into horror is damn good. Her bothersome Red is one of the best I’ve seen in film. Her duality in character is extraordinary and to watch out for.

✅ The Wilsons and their Doppelgangers
While Lupita stands out, who wouldn’t forget how amazing each of the Wilsons and their doppelgangers are portrayed. By the time we see them face to face, we know we are in for a treat.

✅ Killing Spree
What’s differing from this film and “Get Out” was how intense and suspenseful this film was. “Us” was bloodier and gorier exacting kills by the Wilsons versus their tethers and the tethers of their neighbors. I can’t help myself but feel uneasy knowing they are just around the corner ready to attack.

✅ Horror References
Jaws shirt, the tapes at the beginning, and the Thriller shirt are just a few I spotted when I watched this film. The surprise though was when Jordan Peele self-referenced himself by having the Wilsons “Get Out” of the car.

✅ Social Commentary
Jordan Peele exacts on satire with his comedy but in horror he expressed commentary that are self-reflective of our society. In “Us”, human’s duality in nature are so conflicting; it exacts on the context that we are our own enemy. Jordan also creates something scary about something that seems to have that sense of optimism and charity. “Us” may also have that “United States” meaning because it reflects the country in so many ways.

✅ “I Got 5 On It” and the Us Anthem
The music sets the tone for a movie's emotion and vibe and the choice of a rap song to be that theme for a horror movie is amazingly good. The opening sequence where we see the rabbits while the “Anthem” was being played made me feel uneasy without even those scary moments we are yet to see in this film. The goosebumps are there every time I got exposed to the music.

✅ Shocking Ending
I got caught off guard with the movie’s ending. It’s definitely a plot twist that I can’t just mention yet but it left my jaw on hold until I left the cinema.

With 8 amazing reasons to watch and no reasons not to watch,
"Us" is a 10/10 for me.
