JR's Top 20 All-Time Favorite Love Songs of the Past

March 2011 is where the heat starts up in the Philippines.
That's why as summer starts, let us end the draft of love with a Special Late Night Top 10 List:
JR's Top 20 Love Songs of the Past

In this list, JR gave his pick for the best Love Songs of the Past. Considering that February is the Month of the Hearts, JR publishes this blog as a form of commemorating it during the Start Up of Summer. The list by the way is dominated by David Archuleta (4 songs) and Taylor Swift (3 songs) and led by a song from a 2007 Romantic Movie flick.

This list is composed of Love Songs made and performed in music videos prior to 27 March 2011. Also, all songs in this list were made to it that it was made in the past 11 years (2000-2010) since there are already list in the internet that shows the Top 10 Love Songs of All Time which are mostly composed of songs from the 70's, 80's and 90's.

Music and Lyrics
WAY BACK INTO LOVE
(Hugh Grant and Hayley Bennett)
Music Release Date: 13 February 2007
Genre: Love Song, Pop, Piano
Song Length: 4 Minutes 39 Seconds
Writer(s): Adam Schlesinger

And JR's All-Time Favorite Love Song is the one that came from the movie "Music and Lyrics". There is no doubt that this is the best Love Song in History. It really makes the heart beat up for any couple. Though the song is great, it is also nice to watch the movie as it shows a simple history on how the song was formed. The movie also gives us the in depth meaning of the song. Alex Fletcher and Sophie Fisher you rocked our hearts for making this song.

A Little Too Not Over You David Archuleta
A LITTLE TOO NOT OVER YOU
(David Archuleta)
Music Release Date: 6 January 2009
Genre: Love Song, Pop
Song Length: 3 Minutes 18 Seconds
Writers: David Archuleta, Matthew Gerard, Mike Krompass, Robbie Nevil

Second in JR's list is A Little Too Not Over You by David Archuleta. Despite being runner-up in the seventh season of the American Idol, David had always wrote songs that hit the Billboard Charts. Almost all of his songs are related with love and break-ups. JR's Most Favorite David Archuleta song is A Little Too Not Over You since, as the title of the song indicates, the song gives a bit of emphasis on never giving up with the one you love. It is a song that reminds us that we always have a chance in fixing all problems before it is already too late. Well, David, nice selection for the song title and the music video... JR is really inspired by it ;)

Superman (It's Not Easy) Five For Fighting
SUPERMAN (IT'S NOT EASY)
(Five For Fighting)
Music Release Date: 2000
Genre: Love Song, Soft Rock
Song Length: 3 Minutes 42 Seconds
Writer(s): John Ondrasik

This song is what I believe to be the start-up of the Love Song and Soft Rock Genre Combination. In this list of JR's All-Time Favorite Love Songs of the Past, this song is probably the oldest of all. This song reminds us all that we are all superheros in a way but we should always remember that it's not easy to be perfect like Superman. We also have our own individual weaknesses that surrounds our strengths. We should understand the capabilities of our love ones to avoid fights and disagreements.

Lucky Jason Mraz ft. Colbie Caillat
LUCKY
(Jason Mraz ft. Colbie Caillat)
Music Release Date: January 2009
Genre: Love Song, Pop Rock, Acoustic Rock
Song Length: 3 Minutes 10 Seconds
Writers: Jason Mraz, Colbie Caillat, Timothy Fagan

Are Jason and Colbie really inlove or are they just best friends and very lucky to have each other? Well, maybe JR got their point with the lyrics... it was wrote to emphasize the love they have for each other. ;) The thing that made this song number 4 is its public popularity and recognition. JR recognizes this song very much because of the fact it was really a huge hit last 2009. As I have said, this song emphasizes the love that may occur between two close friends.

Big City Dreams Never Shout Never
BIG CITY DREAMS
(Never Shout Never)
Music Release Date: 08 October 2009
Genre: Love Song, Pop, Acoustic
Song Length: 3 Minutes 14 Seconds
Writer(s): Christopher Drew Ingle

Many of you might not recognize Never Shout Never (also known by his real name Christopher Drew Ingle). Like David Archuleta, he is also a singer and songwriter of love songs. Also like Justin Bieber, at the age of 16, he became popular to the public via YouTube. He is known with the songs "Can't Stand It" and "What Is Love?"; but Big City Dreams is his first music single that sparked his stardom dreams. Big City Dreams is a song that shows how a teenager would miss his partner very much if they are parting distances with each other. This song gives us the idea how a person really loves his love one even though he/she would go away. As Christopher says, "Anywhere is Away from Me".

Two Is Better Than One Boys Like Girls
TWO IS BETTER THAN ONE
(Boys Like Girls ft. Taylor Swift)
Music Release Date: 19 October 2009
Genre: Love Song, Country Pop
Song Length: 4 Minutes 2 Seconds
Writer(s): Martin Johnson

Did you remember JR's scientific formula for love? Wherein Love = Square Root of 75% Affection plus 25% Communication divided by 100% Personality + 1 Appearance. This was one of JR's Facebook Status last 2009. If all of the values that you used are all one because it is really the value of identity, you get two. Well, enough of the equation because you might not get it. (hehe...) Anyways, at six is Two is Better Than One by Boys Like Girls ft. Taylor Swift. As the song title states, two is better than one. Love is not possible with loving oneself; it is possible by loving others.

The Reason Hoobastank
THE REASON
(Hoobastank)
Music Release Date: 27 April 2004
Genre: Love Song, Alternative Rock, Pop Rock
Song Length: 3 Minutes 53 Seconds
Writers: Douglas Robb and Dan Estrin

The Reason is somewhat a "Love-Rock" song. If you listen to the song and watch its music video, some of you might guess the true meaning of the song while most of you might really don't understand the relationship of the music video and song. The music video presents us a fake car bump to a girl just to disturb the jewelry shop's owner leading to the girl's boyfriend and company to steal the ruby kept in the safe. So this is what I perceive as the meaning of the song and video: being one-half of a couple, we should always try to risk and do everything in order for us to get what we want for each other. Risking is not a huge thing for a couple, it is a normal thing. And that is the reason why The Reason by Hoobastank is a favorite of JR.

Hey Soul Sister Train
HEY, SOUL SISTER
(Train)
Music Release Date: 11 August 2009
Genre: Love Song, Folk Rock, Roots Rock
Song Length: 3 Minutes 37 Seconds
Writers: Amund Bjorkland, Espen Lind, Patrick Monahan

A Digital Download Hit. The Sensational Love Song of the Past Decade. Hey, Soul Sister. As JR have researched, this song was actually not meant to be a love song but an imagination of the Burning Man in Nevada. This fact is actually weird but definitely proven and true. The song depicts the imagining of a man of his perfect someone. This song also gives the man's obsession with that girl whom he wants to be with in the future. As Patrick Monahan stated in this song, he does not wanna miss a single thing his "soul sister" would do tonight. Nice lyrics for this song since you really have to watch the music video to grab the hidden meaning of the song. :)

Crush David Archuleta
CRUSH
(David Archuleta)
Music Release Date: 12 August 2008
Genre: Love Song, Pop
Song Length: 3 Minutes 33 Seconds
Writers: Jess Cates, Dave Hodges, Emanuel Kiriakou

Crush is the start-up of Love. Having a crush is when a person falls in love with a person he/she might or might not know. In this song of David Archuleta, it gives a definition of crush and how does it start. It does not simply shows the physical attraction of an individual to another, but it also shows how hanging out with some co-workers or doing activities with some friends can lead to crushes.

Can't Stand It Never Shout Never
CAN'T STAND IT
(Never Shout Never)
Music Release Date: 8 March 2010
Genre: Love Song, Pop
Song Length: 3 Minutes 5 Seconds
Writer(s): Christopher Drew Ingle

Well, Never Shout Never fans, check it out. JR listed another Christopher Drew Ingle single in his Top 15 All-Time Favorite Love Songs of the Past. In the United States, it became popular as soon as it was released. In the Philippines, however, it became popular in the Pinoy TV Show Pinoy Big Brother Teen Clash (at the time when Bret Jackson sang this song). The thing that make me love this song is the deep meaning of it. Everytime a person becomes in love with another individual, he/she also becomes in love with his/her actions. That person thinks that his/her boyfriend/girlfriend's actions are cute. I think it is the "Can't Stand It" theory that applies here. ;)

Love Story Taylor Swift
LOVE STORY
(Taylor Swift)
Music Release Date: 12 September 2008
Genre: Love Song, Country Pop
Song Length: 3 Minutes 57 Seconds
Writer(s): Taylor Swift

Definitely, Taylor Swift's All-Time Best Music Single would make it into JR's Top 15 All-Time Favorite Love Songs of the Past. It qualifies in the 2000-2010 production qualification and it also qualifies since it is a love song. Taylor Swift became an icon because of this love song which tells a love story.

Teenage Dream Katy Perry
TEENAGE DREAM
(Katy Perry)
Music Release Date: 23 July 2010
Genre: Love Song, Pop, Electropop, Pop Rock
Song Length: 3 Minutes 47 Seconds
Writers: Katy Perry, Lukasz Gottwald, Max Martin, Benjamin Levin, Bonnie McKee

Katy Perry described this song as a reminiscent of her youth while contemplating her future marriage to boyfriend Russell Brand. This song gives a simple story of teenage love in which was also shown in its music video. This song gives emphasis on what love really means to teenagers. Well, it's a nice thing that Katy Perry wrote a slow tempo love song for once.

Just The Way You Are Bruno Mars
JUST THE WAY YOU ARE
(Bruno Mars)
Music Release Date: 20 July 2010
Genre: Love Song, R&B, Pop
Song Length: 3 Minutes 40 Seconds
Writers: Peter Hernandez, Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine, Khalil Walton, Khari Cain

13 makes up Bruno Mars' Just The Way You Are. There is really no doubt that this song is the biggest breakout in Billboard Charts 2010, considering that it still made up to the Top 20 Songs of Billboard Hot 100 Songs of 2010 even though it only had 3 months to become part of the weekly charts. This song erases our wrong notion of "becoming another person" or "being filled up with make-up" to make our boyfriend/girlfriend love us more. A person should learn the value of loving his/her loved one just the way he/she is.

Something About Love David Archuleta
SOMETHING ABOUT LOVE
(David Archuleta)
Music Release Date: 20 July 2010
Genre: Love Song, Pop
Song Length: 4 Minutes 22 Seconds
Writers: David Archuleta, Sam Hollander, Dave Katz, Chris DeStefano

What is Love? This third song of David Archuleta in JR's Top 20 All-Time Favorite Love Songs of the Past describes what love really is (in accordance to David Archuleta's opinion). And here are some of the definitions of love that JR got from the song: Love is something that we wait to call us. Love is something that makes us blame ourselves everyday. Love is something present in our everyday lives. Love is our servant that helps us beat our hearts. Love is something that breaks our heart setting us free. And finally, love tears us up so we can still believe. This truly is a love song that would define what love really is about.

Never Let You Go Justin Bieber
NEVER LET YOU GO
(Justin Bieber)
Music Release Date: 2 March 2010
Genre: Love Song, Teen Pop, R&B
Song Length: 4 Minutes 26 Seconds
Writers: Justin Bieber, Johnta Austin, Bryan-Michael Cox

Though Justin Bieber is too much hated in YouTube, JR admires only some of his songs. One of those songs is Never Let You Go. It is what I believe to be his third best musical single (after Baby and Never Say Never, of course). Justin Bieber broke out his regular lively pop music in this song. As the song title indicates, the song gives us the idea of how a guy would never let go of his girlfriend. It's kind of relating though ;)

Mine Taylor Swift
MINE
(Taylor Swift)
Music Release Date: 4 August 2010
Genre: Love Song, Country Pop, Pop
Song Length: 3 Minutes 51 Seconds
Writer(s): Taylor Swift

Another Taylor Swift hit is in the list. Mine by Taylor Swift is what I believe to be the second best musical single of Taylor Swift. If you don't believe me, then watch the music video and interpret the song's meaning. Like Taylor Swift's Love Story, Mine is also a song that tells the love story of a couple who also had somewhat the same fate as the relationship of the lady's mom and dad but it ended out differently with them.

Passenger Seat Stephen Speaks
PASSENGER SEAT
(Stephen Speaks)
Music Release Date: 2000
Genre: Love Song, Pop, Acoustic Rock
Song Length: 4 Minutes 35 Seconds
Writer(s): Stephen Speaks

Distraction, my dear, is the keyword for this next love song. Passenger Seat is a song which tells the deep love and obsession of the dude/dudette to his/her boyfriend/girlfriend. This meaning can be proved with the chorus of the song: "Oh and I've got all that I need, Right here in the passenger seat, Oh and I can't keep my eyes on the road, Knowing that she's inches from me". It definitely is a nice courting song for any guy for his most beloved someone special.

Everytime Britney Spears
EVERYTIME
(Britney Spears)
Music Release Date: 17 May 2004
Genre: Love Song, Soft Rock
Song Length: 3 Minutes 50 Seconds
Writers: Britney Spears, Annette Stamatelatos

Did you know that Britney Spears also performed a slow love song? Well, Britney Spears is known to her lively pop songs; but there is one song that she wrote (that is slow) for her ex-boyfriend (a.k.a. Justin Timberlake). This song is a great sorry song for any couple who did not came up to be in good terms. This song speaks of the girlfriend's regret of having left her boyfriend because of just simple fights and disagreements. I am sometimes reminded by some lines in this song and that is: "Everytime I try to fly I fall without my wings I feel so small. I guess I need you baby. And everytime I see you in my dreams, I see your face, you're haunting me. I guess I need you baby." This couple of lines from the song tells the whole gist of the song.

Rocketeer Far East Movement
ROCKETEER
(Far East Movement ft. Ryan Tedder)
Music Release Date: 29 October 2010
Genre: Love Song, Alternative Hip Hop, Europop
Song Length: 3 Minutes 31 Seconds
Writers: Bruno Mars, Jae Choung, James Roh, Kevin Nishimura, Virman Coquia, Jonathan Yip, Jeremy Reeves, Ray Romulus, Philip Lawrence

And probably the newest of all songs listed in JR's Top 20 All-Time Favorite Love Songs of the Past. Some people might question me on why is this song qualified to be a love song because it does not even mention anything about love. The music video tells us the hidden meaning of the song. Rocketeer is a plan planned and designed by a skater dude which he plans to use in going to his girlfriend in Japan. He plans to rocketeer there in order for them to be together again. The song is really in the pop tempo but the meaning is not really as it seems.

Zero Gravity David Archuleta
ZERO GRAVITY
(David Archuleta)
Music Release Date: 2009
Genre: Love Song, Pop
Song Length: 3 Minutes 15 Seconds
Writer(s): David Archuleta

And finally, the last and final song in JR's Top 20 All-Time Favorite Love Songs of the Past - a 4th David Archuleta song. Zero Gravity is actually a test song, meaning to say a song which was not originally and officially released to the public. It only became known to David Archuleta's concerts. This song gives a peek on what happens when people fall in love. It is definitely a love song for all genre's and all seasons.

As JR releases his Top 20 All-Time Favorite Love Songs of the Past, JR would definitely have the new music lists on stand-by. Maybe the rock genre, or even the dance genre. As JR always says, "We never know".
